Rules:

1. Reliability - Students and teachers will be reliable. They will be punctual when arriving

to school and to class. The teachers will be prepared to teach and the students will be

ready to learn. When the students are reliable to themselves and to others, the classroom

will be much more efficient.

2. Readiness - The students will come to school ready and willing to learn. School is a

privilege that the students have. Students will be reminded regularly how important

school is for personal, academic, and emotional growth. In addition, school is the

gateway to success in life.

3. Respect - Students and teachers will respect each other. They will respect school property

and school belongings. They will take care and keep track of their own belongings as

well. Respect is the key for a healthy school environment. Everything else stems from

this rule.

4. Responsibility - Students will take full responsibility for their words, actions, and school

success. Success is not earned easily and students will be required to work hard to

achieve this. Student responsibility will grow with age and every student in the classroom

will have a particular responsibility as well.

Consequences:

1. Warning - Students will first receive a verbal then a written warning after an instance of

misconduct. Students will receive a verbal warning that will remind them of the rule, why

the rule is in place, and the consequence for if it occurs again.

3

2. Visit to the office - If this is a repeated offense or if the action is serious enough, the

student will be sent to the office to speak with the principle about the wrongdoings. It is

up the principal’s discretion to give the student a proper consequence.

3. Community clean up - After multiple offenses, or if the principle decides, the student will

be required to do a form of community clean up. This can occur both on the school

property and out in the community. The school will provide the necessary transportation

if the clean up is off of school property. This consequence not only benefits the student, it

also benefits the community and the environment.

4. Parent-teacher-principal conferences - This consequence is reserved for serious offenses.

This type of consequence typically results in a serious decision such as suspension,

expulsion, or a long term consequence within the school. This decision is very serious

and should always involve the parents or a legal guardian.

Team Encouragement Strategies

1. Classroom rules made by teacher and students - When classroom rules are a team effort,

they are much more likely to be respected and followed. Students who have some form of

contribution will feel more responsible for obeying the rules and they will have a deeper

understanding for why the rules are in place.

2. Communication - Students and teachers will communicate with each other in a timely

and respectful manner. Students may communicate with the teacher using verbal or

written expressions. This will encourage healthy student-teacher relationships that are

based on mutual love and respect.

4

3. Growth mindset - All students will be encourage to maintain a growth mindset. A growth

mindset encourages students to think positively about their talents and abilities. In

addition, a growth mindset maintains the belief that abilities can be achieved through

hard work and dedication. This mindset is extremely important to sustain, especially

when failure arises.

4. Respect - Students are to respect themselves and others. This will help relationships

flourish as students will continue wanting the best for those around them. Respect will

also manifest itself in other areas including family relationships, care of objects and

belongings, and the dignity of the human person.

Team Procedures:

1. Going to the bathroom

a. There will be a bathroom “pass” that only allows one student at a time to use the

restroom

b. There will be a sign-out and sign-in sheet near the door where the student will put

their name and time leaving and returning

c. Bathroom trips that exceed 15 minutes will receive a warning

d. Two students will not leave for the bathroom at same time without extenuating

circumstances.

2. Using technology

a. Students will not be permitted to use any personal technology devices (iPhones,

Laptops, iPads) unless there is written permission from a guardian and the teacher

finds an applicable reason to allow technology for a class period.

5

b. Students will only use internet in the computer lab

c. All cell phones will be placed in the locker at the beginning of the day and will

not be removed until the end.

3. Taking a test

a. Students must be two desk-lengths apart while taking a test

b. Students are to keep their eyes on the paper for the entire test taking period. When

a student has completed the test, they will be excused to the relaxation room near

the counselors office.

c. Any student that is caught cheating will immediately be sent to the office

d. Cheating will not be permitted in any circumstance and students will be reminded

of this before each test.

Parent-Teacher Conference:

Parent-Teacher conferences will be held once a year for a regular check in. Other parent-teacher

conferences will be held for one of two reasons: their child is struggling academically or the

student has a broken a rule and consequences must be discussed. Parents and the teacher will

have regular phone calls to touch base about the success of the student. This communication will

bridge the gap between school and home. During any interaction with parents, teachers should

remain respectful and open to discussion. This relationship is vital for a rewarding experience for

both the student and the family. Teachers are expected to be prepared for each conference to

make it as efficient and professional as possible. The goal is to help the student succeed.

Teachers are to make that goal clear and always begin each conference or meeting with the

positive aspects of the student.

6

School Community Plan:

The school will base the community upon mutual goals of respect and success. The students in

the school will be separated into fifteen different groups with a mentor leading each group. The

mentor can be a teacher or administrator. This mentor will be trained and will be a mandatory

reporter. This system will help the students by giving them a smaller sense of community within

the groups. Each month, the groups will meet and do an activity. These meetings are mandatory

and essential for the success of the community. The meetings will also include a time to share

wisdom and to share positives occurrences that happened in the month. There will be rules to

what should and should not be said during these share times. At the end of the school year, each

team will pick a type of food by votes and will have an end of the year picnic. This plan is to

help each student succeed by giving them a reliable community to lean on.

Theorist - Lev Vygotsky

Lev Vygotsky believed in the importance of community and social based learning in his Social

Learning theories. Knowledge can be found in these social contexts are invaluable to the

formation of the human person (Vygotsky, 1978, p. 102). This connects closely to the school

community plan as it emphasizes the importance of community and mentoring in every setting.

When students work together as a community, they achieve much more and learn many skills

along the way. The Social Learning theory is important to remember while preparing academics

and planning for student achievement.
