Summary:

A walkability survey was conducted in Naga City as a first step to know the
existing conditions and to identify specific pedestrian-related shortcomings. The
pedestrian interview survey involves designing a questionnaire to find out the people’s
perception of pedestrian facilities.

In our survey, I targeted the workers and students as potential interviewees to

know their insights about the topic. In 30 persons who got interviewed, 21 of them are
students and 9 are active workers. It is found that 20% of them are satisfied and the 70%
rest are not satisfied with the existing pedestrian facilities in the city and those who are
not happy feel the need of improvements in street lighting; clean, reducing road traffic
and speed; removal of obstacles along the walking paths and more improvements for
the accessibility of the PWDs.

The results show that safety and land use are important for both motivations for
walking. This provides empirical evidence that can guide development toward the city
that provide safety to pedestrians and cyclists and promote a mix of land uses to
increase physical activity.

Conducting a walkability assessment provides an opportunity to raise awareness

about these benefits and the conditions in Naga City. It only shows that we need an
improvement for our city in terms of Walkability.
