Part I. Creating Communication Scenarios and Communication Analysis

1. “Where Do I (or Have I) Worked” Communication Analysis: Make a narrative

on the communication process/communication type (how communication is
done) on the organization for which you currently or previously have worked.
Introduce us briefly to this organization and to your role within it (title, tasks
performed, etc.).

Answer:

After I graduated in college in April 2015, I worked from May to October 2015 as
a Full- time Budget Staff in the Municipal Budget Office in the Local Government
Unit of Socorro, Surigao del Norte. It is a political subdivision where I come from. In
local government, public funds are distributed according to their allocation as
proposed by the Sanggunian Bayan Members and implemented by the
executive branch. It is the Municipal Budget Office which directly handles the
implementation.

As it was my first job experience, I had been so diligent about my work. I organized
vouchers that contain payroll for the government employees, I helped allocate
the budget for where it was supposed to be spend with, I also attended several
trainings and workshops for proper allocation of public funds.

Being a government employee, communication takes place directly with other

co- employees. Most of the people I got to interact with directly go to our
government office to ask for financial assistance, health assistance, burial
assistance, travel expenses and other allocation- related services. Sometimes,
there are difficulties in communicating with them as most of them do not
understand how allocation of public funds work. In government office, the public
funds being proposed by the legislative branch are already allocated to certain
proportions in monthly basis.

Then answer the questions that follow:

What are the causes of Communication Breakdown in your organization?

Answer:

The cause of breakdown in communication in our office was when a lot of the
locals were innocent as to how budgeting public funds work. When we try to
make them understand, they have already put their mind onto something and
would insist it. There is difficulty in making them understand the process.

b. What are some examples of Communication Problems and Bad

Communication in your workplace?

Answer:

For example, there were a lot of locals who ask for financial assistance in a certain
month, and the budget for that month has already reached to its maximum
amount. There is a difficulty in making them understand that the budget for that
month has already been used up, so they have to wait for the next month in order
to attend to their needs.

c. How did you manage to solve communication problems in your

workplace/organization?

Answer:

In order to resolve the communication issues at work, I tried to calm myself thinking
that this is how government works, most of the people who come to our office
were not able to finish high school or college so I tried to understand their way of
thinking, by explaining to them the process. However, as a new employee, they
somehow have doubts as to my authority, so I have to communicate with our
budget office head to make the locals understand the proper transaction.

2. Create at least two scenarios (personal experiences) illustrating the following

models of communication:

a. Berlo’s Model

1. In law classes, the sender is the professor who has strong attitude in sharing his
knowledge of the law, its contents, how it was structured. We are able to receive
the message by hearing his discussions, seeing the written laws and jurisprudence,
and sometimes we get the chills for the oral recitations conducted. However,
when properly discussed by the professor, we get the strong attitude and
understand the message.
2. When attending workshop or training, the lecturer has also strong attitude, he
shares his knowledge of certain processes and techniques, we get to understand
the message and its contents by hearing, seeing the examples given, so as
receivers or listeners, we share our respective insights about it.

b. Schramm’s Model

1. I haven’t talked to my best friend in a while so I decide to call her on my way

home from school. I take turns updating each other on our weekends, what we
have planned for the summer, and how members of our respective families are
doing. When we hang up each other, we promise to chat again soon.

2. In school, there are activities that are done with partners, so I look for a partner,
being the sender, I convert or ask my seatmate, asks her how it should be done,
and then she tries to explain what she has understood about the activity, maybe
we have different understanding about it, based on our own experiences and
values that influence the way how I convey my own idea and how she interprets
it.

c. Shannon-Weaver’s Model

1. When the human resource officer from the company I applied for called thru
phone, by that time I was in a jeepney, so the noise has actually interrupted the
call as we could not properly hear each other.

2. When my friend and were talking over the phone in a long distance. In the
middle of our conversation, the call was interrupted because the signal is bad.
Part II. Create/Provide your own interpretation/insights on the following sayings
and integrate real life communication situations:

a. “No man is an island, no man stands alone.”

Answer:

It means that no one is truly self-sufficient, everyone must rely on the company
and comfort of others in order to thrive. A man, although sometimes they love to
be alone, however they cannot avoid to have interaction with others in order to
survive. For example, in running a business, you have built that business in your
own, however if you cannot interact properly with clients, your business won’t
survive.

b. “Speech is the voice of the heart.” – Anna Quindlen

Answer:

When we try to interact with others, it is through words or speech. For example,
when you miss someone, sometimes you can’t help but tell that person sincerely
how much you miss him.

c. “Your eyes say it when your lips fail to express it.”

Answer:

They say your eyes can speak a thousand words, even if no words are said.
Sometimes, there are no exact words that can express how you feel about a
certain situation, or there are words that you can’t express, so you try to hold
back, but the eyes speak so much about it. Sometimes through tears.

d. “No culture can live if it attempts to be exclusive.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Answer:

Culture is the repetition of acts or conducts that have been practiced for a while.
That is why when we go to other countries, and we see their locals do something
peculiar to interact with us, we find them somehow in awe. And when we come
back to our own country, we feel the need to share it with others, or share what
we have experienced from other countries. We get to tell others the peculiarity
and so their culture has been shared.

e. “The art of communication is the language of leadership.” – James Humes

Answer:

In leadership, there is a need for the leader to communicate with his members as
it starts there. In performing an activity or task, the leader needs to communicate
with others to ask for their opinion or to share their insights as to how it should be
done.
