Research Title:

IMPROVISED AIR COOLING SYSTEM USING BAMBOO (Bambusa vulgaris)

STEM AND WATER

A. Question or Problem Being Addressed

The study aims to utilize bamboo stem and water as an alternative air cooling

system.

Specifically, the study will answer the following questions:

1. what is the level of acceptability of the product in terms of:

a. Temperature of the house (˚C)

b. Humidity (%)

c. Cost

2. can the improvised air cooling system lessen the temperature of the house ranging

from 22˚C to 26˚C?

3. is there any significant difference between the temperature and humidity of the house

with and without improvised air cooling system?

B. Goals/Expected Outcomes/Hypotheses

1. Goals

This study aims to provide an alternative air cooling system using bamboo stem

and water. This will measure the level of acceptability of the product in terms of

temperature and humidity of the house and the cost of constructing the air ventilation.

This will also compare the temperature and humidity of the house with and without air

ventilation.

2. Expected Outcomes

This study will determine the feasibility of bamboo stem and water as air

ventilation. The aim of this study is to provide a cost-effective air ventilation by bamboo

stem and water. This study will be beneficial among household consumers especially

during dry season. This will also help in lessening the energy consumption by replacing

electric fans and air conditioning units with the alternative air ventilation made from

bamboo stem and water.

3. Hypotheses

This study aims to propose a supposed explanation as a starting point to further

investigation.

Ho: The use bamboo stem and water have no significant effect as an air ventilation.

Ha: The use of bamboo stem and water have a significant effect as an air ventilation.
Ho: There is no significant relationship between the level of acceptability of the

temperature and humidity of the house.

Ha: There is a significant relationship between the level of acceptability of the

temperature and humidity of the house.

Ho: There is no significant difference between the temperature and humidity of the house

with and without air ventilation.

with and without air ventilation.

C. Description in Detail the Methods and Procedure

1. Source of Materials

The researchers will use the materials such as bamboo stem and water as the main

component of the study. 400mL of water as the substance to cool the air, net to avoid the

insects from entering the house, the net will be bought from a hardware. 2 digital

thermometers to measure the temperature of the house and 2 digital hygrometers to

measure the humidity of the house, it will be bought from an online shop. The prototypes

that will serve as the models of the study will be constructed by the researchers.
2. Locale of the Study

This study will be conducted at Jacobo Z. Gonzales Memorial National High

School. This study will be conducted in the period of June to March 2020.

3. Procedures of the Study

A. Constructing the Prototypes

The researchers will construct two prototypes for the study. Plywood will be used

as walls of the houses having a dimension of 25x30x25 inches. The roof type is a typical

metal roofing used in houses with a dimension of 26x10x27 inches. Doors with a

dimension of 8x10 inches and windows with 25 sq. cm that will be installed on both

houses to enable air flow.

B. Installing the Air Cooling System

The two miniature houses will be labeled as AC1 and AC2. The house that will be

installed with air cooling system made from bamboo stem and water will be the AC1 and

the house without air cooling system will be the AC2. To install the air cooling system on

AC1, the researchers will attach the exhaust fan to the both ends of the PVC pipes, this is

to absorb and direct the airflow downward. Water canal will be constructed below the

bamboo to direct cool air inside the house. The water canal will be covered with net so

that the insects will not enter the house.

C. Installing the Thermometer and Hygrometer

The digital thermometer and hygrometer will be attached to the walls of the two

miniature houses to measure the temperature and humidity of the houses.

5. Data Analysis

The experiment will focus on providing an alternative air ventilation using PVC

pipes, exhaust fan and water as the main materials. The ventilation will be tested on two

miniature houses and the temperature and humidity of the house will be recorded.

Observations will focus on the following parameters:

1. level of acceptability of the air ventilation in terms of the temperature of the miniature

house.

2. level of acceptability of the air ventilation in terms of the humidity of the miniature

house.

3. differences between the temperature and humidity of the miniature houses with and

without air ventilation.

They will also provide a camera and record book as the main gathering instrument

for this study to secure the data.
