Course Objectives:
To understand various substation basics, switching configurations, Understand different types of bus bar configurations, SCADA system and its application in
Power System, substation automation and gas insulated substations.

Course Contents/Syllabus:

Module I: Introduction and Layout of Substation
Introduction, Functions of a substation, Classification, Substation equipment and outdoor layout, Factors affecting

layout of substation. Typical Substation in Distribution systems, Isolator and earthing Switch: Requirement, types of
Isolators, Pantograph isolators, Rating of Isolators and tests
Module II: Bus Bar arrangement and Testing of Equipment
Bus Bar arrangements: Single Bus bar, Main and Transfer, ring, breaker and half, double, double and transfer bus
arrangements, Bus bar material, Transformer Testing: Insulation Resistance, turns ratio, induced voltage test, continuity 20
test, DC resistance, Short circuit test Breaker Testing: Insulation Resistance, continuity of contacts, operation of CB
etc,
Module III: Earthing in Substations and Insulation Coordination
Neutral Earthing: Introduction, Disadvantages of ungrounded systems, Types of neutral grounding, reactance in neutral
connection, connection of Arc Suppression coil, neutral point earthing of transformer LV circuits, earthing transformer

Equipment earthing: functions of Substation Earthing System, substation earthing system, step and touch potential,
Earth resistance, integrated earthing system
Insulation Coordination & surge arresters: Choice of Insulation levels of Substation Equipment, protective ratio and
protective margin, lightening arresters specifications and tests.
Module IV SCADA in Substations
SCADA in power systems, SCADA basic functions, SCADA application functions, Advantages of SCADA in power 20
systems, Building blocks of SCADA systems, SCADA communication systems, Substation automation system
Module V: Emerging Technologies and Industry Practices
Role of disruptive technologies in maintenance and operation of sub stations, Processes involved in Erection 10
Commissioning and maintenance of Substations, Case Study on calculations related to establishment of a sub station
