THE DIFFRENCE BETWEEN AKHLAK, MORALS, AND ETHICS

1.Akhlak

In the plural form of morals is khuluq, which means behavior, temperament and
character. In terms, morals are the power of the soul that drives actions easily and spontaneously
without thinking and reflecting on them. (Azyumardi.2002.203-204)

To explain the definition of morals in terms of terms, that character is a trait embedded in
the soul that drives it to do deeds without the need for thought and consideration.

From these definitions, we can see five characteristics contained in moral conduct,
namely; First, moral deeds are actions that have been firmly planted in a person’s soul, so that
they have become his personality. Second, moral deeds are actions carried out easily and without
thought these does not mean that when doing something, the person concerned is in an
unconscious, memory loss, sleep or crazy situation. Third, that moral deeds are actions that arise
from wthin the person doing it, without any coercion or external pressure. Moral deeds are deeds
done on the basis of the will, choice and decision in question. Fourth, that moral deeds are acts
that are actually carried out, not playing games or because they are acting. Fifth, in line with the
fourth characteristics of moral deeds(especially good morals) are actions that are done because of
sincerity solely because of God, not because people want to be praised or because they want to
get a compliment.

2.Moral

The language is formed from the form of the word mores which means custom. This
moral is always associated with good/bad teachings that are generally accepted/society.

Moral in the sense of the term is a term that is used to determine the boundaries of the
nature, temperament, will, opinion or action that can properly be said to be true, false, good or
bad.

In general that moralityis term used to impose limits on human activities with values
(conditions) good or bad, right or wrong. If the natiom of ethics and morals are related to one
another, we can know that between ethics and morals have the same object, which is equally
discussing about human actions then determined whether the position is good or bad.

3.Ethics

In the Britanica Encyclopedia, ethics is expressed as moral philosophy, which is a

systematic study of the nature of the concepts of good, bad, must, right, wrong, and so on.
Besides that, ethics also utilizes various sciences that discuss human behavior such as
anthropology, political science, psychology, sociology, economics and so on.

In other words, ethics is a rule or pattern of behavior produced by human reason. Then
ethics is more a science that deals with efforts to determine the actions of human beings to be
said to be good or bad.

The difference between akhlak, moral, and ethics is in the source that is used as a
benchmark for determining good and bad. If in ethics the evaluation of good and bad is based on
the opinion of the mind, and on moral and akhlak based on generally accepted habits in society,
then on the akhlak standards used to determine good and bad it is by the Quran and Al-Hadith.
