A.4 Determine Base Shear
The Design Base Shear is calculated from ASCE 7-10 Section 12.8.1. Per ASCE 7-10, Table 12.2-1, A.1, R =Gravity

Material properties are f’c=40 MPa, fy=420 MPa. Service gravity loads are 6 kN/m2 dead
(including slab self weight but not wall self weight) and 2 kN/m2 live. Concrete unit weight is 24
kN/m3.

1. Determine the wall length, in cm.

2. Determine the maximum and minimum axial load Pu, in kN, at the wall base.
3. Provide the preliminary design of vertical steel at boundary elements. Include a sketch of the
proposed reinforcement.
4. Provide the preliminary design of vertical and horizontal distributed reinforcement of the
shear wall for shear. Include a sketch of the proposed reinforcement.
5. Provide the preliminary design of confinement steel at boundary elements at the wall base.
Assume that special boundary element is required. Include a sketch of the proposed
reinforcement. Do not forget to check the development length of the hook (horizontal shear
reinforcement) anchored at the core of boundary elements.
6. Check the preliminary vertical reinforcement design (boundary and middle section) by
calculating the shear wall P-M interaction diagram (φMn, φPn) and comparing with the
required demand (Mu, Pu).
7. Design the confinement steel at boundary elements over the height. Determine the heights
over what special boundary element, ordinary boundary element or no confinement steel are
required. Provide an elevation sketch.
8. Note that the building height exceeds the available commercial length of reinforcing bars.
Therefore, splices are required. Moreover, moment demand Mu decreases over the wall
height. Determine all the required splices and locations and reduce the vertical reinforcement
required at boundary elements (bars cut off) at least at one section over the wall height.

Provide a detailed drawing of your complete wall design (cross sections, elevations, details). This
is a fundamental part of your exam solution. Without this part the exam will not be graded.

Note: Report for this final solution must be completely prepared in a computer (text, sketch and
final drawings). Handwritten solutions will not be graded. The exam is individual, no teamwork
allowed (minimum grade 1.0 will be given if teamwork detected).
