LEVEL: 4, TERM: 1, COURSE TITLE: PERIPHERALS and INTERFACING
Answer any ONE of the following two questions.
1.a. Present the block diagram for Intel 8155(expanded)/8255/8251
1.b. Present the Control Word format/Definition for Intel 8155/8251 with functional specification.
Answer any TWO of the following two questions.
2.a. Design two Seven Segment LED displays using ports A and B of the 8155. Write initialization
instructions and display data bytes at each port.
2.b. Give a short description of Intel 8155 Timer along with the Timer Modes.
2.c. Present the Control signals and the sequence of events and timing in data input and output to and
from Intel 8155 I/O ports in Handshake Mode.
2.d. Design an Interfacing Circuit using the 8155 to read and display from an A/D converter to meet the
following requirements- (a) Set up port A in the handshake mode to read data from A/D converter.
(b) Set up port B as an output port to display data at a seven segment display. (c) Use line PC3 from
port C to initiate a conversion. (d) use the generic connection to assign port addresses (e) use the
8155 timer to record the conversion time.
Answer any ONE of the following two questions.
3.a. Specify the bit/port assignments for various modes of 8255A.
3.b. Give a short description of (i) Mode 0: simple input/output mode or (ii) BSR: Bit Set/Reset Mode.
3.c. Design an interfacing circuit (with subroutine and related configuration formats) to read data from
an A/D converter using the 8255A in the Memory Mapped I/O. Now (a) Set up port A to read data (ii)
Set up bit PC0 to start conversion and bit PC7 to read ready status of the converter.
3.d. For Mode 1: Input and Output with Handshake of 8255A, discuss the (i) Mode 1: Input configuration
or (ii) Mode 1: Output Configuration with functions of the signals and timing waveforms.
Answer any ONE of the following two questions.
4.a. Discuss about Intel Hex Format. Discuss the segments onto which the tasks for receiver section can
be divided after examining the Intel Hex Format.
4.b. Present (with functional specification) the signals for Input, Transmitter and Receiver.
Answer any TWO of the following two questions.
5.a. Define I/O interfacing. Present the construction and working principle of (i) Light Emitting Diodes
(LED) or (ii) Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD).
5.b. Explain the construction and working principles of Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) With figure. Describe
and differentiate Electrostatic Focusing and Magnetic Focusing.
5.c. How Shadow Mask Color CRT works? What is Electroluminescent Display?
5.d. Give a short description of Membrane Switch and Hall-Effect Switch.
5.e. What is Keyboard Encoder? Describe the modes of operation on keyboard encoder when more than
one key is depressed?
Answer any ONE of the following two questions.
