Applicant’s Commitment and Capacity

In order to further increase the knowledge of the use of pavilion and the thin shell structure the
following must be needed to be researched.

 Benefits of the pavilion

 Advantages and disadvantages of the thin shell structures
 Timeline and cost effectiveness of the construction of shell structure

Budget and Cost Effectiveness

The construction of a reinforced concrete shell involves many problems, the design and construction of
forms, reinforcement selection and placing, concrete materials and placing, and curing and decentering.
When building with concrete its very time consuming meaning curing of concrete takes long and its cost
labor work is more. The cost of the material is very low. In construction of a large span, is better the with
concrete. Thin shell was great when is started then it slow down because of time it consume. Concrete
thin shell is coming back.

Advantages of Shell Structures

 High strength with respect to its self-weight. (Major criteria to measure efficiency )
 Very High Stiffness
 Large space covered
 Lowers the construction cost
 Aesthetic value

The curved shapes often used for concrete shells are naturally strong structures, allowing wide areas to
be spanned without the use of internal supports, giving an open, unobstructed interior. The use of
concrete as a building material reduces both materials cost and construction costs, as concrete is
relatively inexpensive and easily cast into compound curves. The resulting structure may be immensely
strong and safe; modern monolithic dome houses, for example, have resisted hurricanes and fires.

Disadvantages of Shell Structures

 Concrete being the porous material may lead to the problem of seepage
 Due to its geometry, it is not possible to add another floor above it.
 Basically it is the roof covering structure.

Since concrete is a porous material, concrete domes often have issues with sealing. If not treated,
rainwater can seep through the roof and leak into the interior of the building. On the other hand, the
seamless construction of concrete domes prevents air from escaping, and can lead to buildup of
condensation on the inside of the shell. Shingling or sealants are common solutions to the problem of
exterior moisture, and dehumidifiers or ventilation can address condensation.

Implementation
Full implementation and realization of the proposal of Pabellón de la Universidad Nacional will take place
as soon as the plans and specification has been approved. Also, the approval of National University
administration for the schedule of the construction is also needed. The following must be prepared:

 All plans and drawings of the project

 Approval of the administration of National University
 Cost estimates of the project
 Schedule of construction

The completion of the remaining tasks will expedite the completion of the National University Pavilion
once the approval has given.
