A laterally supported steel beam having a simple span of 7 m with
yield strength of 250 MPa and the section has the following
properties:
bf = 500 mm d = 724 mm
tf = 12 mm tw = 10 mm
ME33 : Fluid Flow 3 Chapter 11: Flow over bodies; lift and drag
Compute the allowable bending stress in W 21x57 steel if lateral
supports are provided at the beam ends only.
bf = 170 mm d = 535 mm
tf = 17 mm tw = 10 mm
rt = 42 mm
ME33 : Fluid Flow 3 Chapter 11: Flow over bodies; lift and drag
The figure shows the arrangement of beams and girders which are used to support a 150mm
reinforced concrete floor for small industrial building. Live load is 7196 N/mm2. Assume
beams to be simply supported and fully laterally supported. Use A36 steel. Weight of
concrete is 23.5 kN/m3
ME33 : Fluid Flow 3 Chapter 11: Flow over bodies; lift and drag
A steel beam having a simple span of 8 m is subjected to clockwise moment M at the left
end and 25% of M (Counter clockwise) at the right end. The steel section has the following
Fy = 248 MPa
rt = 0.053 m
d = 0.533 m
bf = 0.210 m
tf = 0.016 m
Sx = 0.00206 m3
ME33 : Fluid Flow 3 Chapter 11: Flow over bodies; lift and drag
A W 450 x 55 consisting of Fy = 311 MPa is used for continuous span of 15.2 m/ It carries a
uniformly distributed load of 17.6 kN/m and two concentrated loads of 90 kN acting at the
midspan between the supports.
a. Compute the maximum moment due to the actual loads. Neglect the weight of the beam.
b. Compute the actual bending stress of the beam using NSCP specifications and compare
to the allowable bending stress, if continuous lateral support is provided by a reinforced
concrete slab.
c. Compute the actual bending stress if lateral supports is provided only at beam supports
and midspans and compare to the allowable bending stress using NSCP specifications.
