ACTIVITY PROPOSAL

A. Activity and Description

On the basis of theoretical and experimental studies, attitudes, motivation, and interest
are regarded as important determinants of quality and in depth of learning processes, student
persistence, and study choice (Maltese & Tai, 2011). Many Educational innovations, including
context-based teaching, inquiry-based teaching, and ICT usage has been proposed, both in
science and in mathematics education, to foster positive attitudes (Fortus, 2014). It is therefore
important that students are engaged in interesting end enjoyable experiences that will leave
positive marks on the students’ perception of the subjects Mathematics and Science.
This activity is proposed by the YES-O and Mathematics Club Members to encourage
their co-students to have a positive perception of Science and Mathematics Subjects through
enjoyable activities that they can associate with the Mathematics and Science Month. This
activity is also proposed by the members as a fundraising event for the upcoming Science and
Mathematics Camp as well as the prizes for the winners of the different competitions to be held
in the month of September.

B. Venue and Duration

The V&G National High School Science and Mathematics Battle of Colors: Survival of
the Fittest is set on September 2, 2019, Monday afternoon starting 4:00-6:00 pm. The event will
start with the accounting of registered members and teams present and then an introduction to the
objectives and mechanics of the game. The game will last for 1 hr. and 30 minutes. After which,
a mini concert will occur which will showcase their talents.

C. Organizers and Activity Partners

The organizer of the event will be the Science and Mathematics Coordinators, Yes-O
Officers, Mathematics Club Officers. The Activity partners are the SSG officers and the
participating advisers form each grade level.

D. Participants and Persons Involved

This event will feature the members of the Youth for the Environment and Science
Organization and the members of the Mathematics Club, all of which are bona fide students of
V&G National High School. The event coordinators will also invite local school bands and
spoken poetry enthusiasts to present during the mini concert.
E. Background and Rationale
In the studies of Kind et al. (2007), in factor analysis on questionnaire data from 932
students, found that questions about “learning science in school”, learning science outside
school”, and “future participation in science” would load on a single factor, which they termed
general interest in science. Even if students agree that science is important, this opinion may
remain unrelated to students’ feelings about science themselves (Savelsbergh, 2016). Several
studies has been found out about Mathematics as well. It is therefore necessary to create or foster
positive attitude in students towards Science and Mathematics.

In relation to this, V&G National High School will be having its first ever Science and
mathematics Battle of Colors. This is an exciting way to allow students to create fond memories
they can associate with Science and Mathematics month and therefore allow students to create
positive outlook on the subjects Science and Mathematics. This can also serve as a gateway for
the students to engage in mentally stimulating tasks that will focus on developing leadership,
responsibility and self-confidence.

F. Objectives

The Science and Mathematics Battle of Colors has the following specific objectives:
a. Encourage students to develop interest in Math and Science through a variety of fun
and exciting activities they can relate to Science and Mathematics;
b. Provide students with outdoor education experience;
c. Showcase the students in music and poetry;
d. Develop self-confidence and self-respect; and
e. Develop their capacities for leadership.

G. Methodology and Management

To have a smooth flow of the events, the Yes-O Officers and Mathematics Club Officers
will execute meetings weeks ahead of the occasion in order to have a healthy discussion on what
will transpire on the event. Committees will be organized to discuss and manage various
activities to have a systematic flow of the event. A committee that will manage the
communication and coordination to the faculty and outside resources will also be assigned.

In the preparation of the venues, the Accommodation Committee will secure and prepare
the venues and materials that will be used in each of the activity.

On the day of the event, the different committees will perform their assigned tasks.
Furthermore, the coordinators and teachers will facilitate and coordinate with the committees to
ensure a smooth flow of the activities. The Committee on Program is entitled to guide the
participants with the flow of the program, instructing them on what to do, seeing to it that the
schedule is accordingly followed.

A post-meeting will be held by the Coordinators, Teacher participants, YES-O Officers,

Mathematics Club Officers and SSG Officers to deliberate about the conduct of the Science and
Mathematics Battle of Colors in order for the coordinators to distinguish what goes wrong and
evaluate the activities and performances of the different committees. Through this meeting,
documents will be gathered and kept for future references.
