IB Mathematics HL Syllabus

Teacher: Mr. Arthur Braga ( arthur.braga@eac.com.br )

Purpose: Prepare the student for university math by connecting the base math concepts in IB
Mathematics HL to their own experiences.

Relevant TOK questions:

We can use mathematics successfully to model real-world processes. Is this because we create
mathematics to mirror the world or because the world is intrinsically mathematical?
How have technological innovations, such as developments in computing, affected the nature and
practice of mathematics?

11th grade content:

1st semester- (Vectors, 10th grade units + addendum, differentiation)
Vectors
Algebra
Functions and equations
Circular functions and trigonometry
2nd semester-
Calculus

12th grade content:

Internal Assessment
Calculus option
Statistics and probability

Textbook: Haese Mathematics for the International Student Higher Level

Mathematics for the International Student, Mathematics HL (Option): Calculus HL Topic 9

Where Math HL fits in relative to other IB math choices:

Math is my favorite subject
and/or
I plan to study in a math-related career like science, engineering, mathematics, economics
and/or
I love an academic challenge
and/or
I am willing to work up to about 45-90 minutes a day in preparation for each 45-90min class

Final IB grade (1-7), sent in July after you graduate, is based on:
30% Paper1 (2 hours -100 points in May of final year) - GDC calculator not allowed, graded by IB.
30% Paper2 (2 hours -100 points in May of final year-following day) - calculator allowed, graded by
IB.
20% Paper3 (1 hour -50 points in May of final year)- calculator allowed, graded by IB
20% internal assessment-written project due approx. February of final year, graded by Mr. Braga and
moderated by IB. We will choose the project topic at the end of the first IB academic year.
The IB grade for Math HL (1 to 7) contributes to whether you will be awarded the IB Diploma (basic
rule: average of 4 in each class, plus other basic requirements, will be awarded the diploma)
EAC Semester grades based on:

70% summative grades:

3-6 summative unit tests, each worth 100 points (curved grading below 75).
1 summative comprehensive exam, worth 200 points. (curved grading)
3-6 blog entries, each worth 48 points. Given class period to work on it. May be resubmitted
for final regrade one week after initial grading.
(senior year- 1 summative IA rough draft 100 points, 1 summative IA final version 100
points)

30% formative grades:

Formative work cannot be submitted late.

3-6 unit investigations, each worth 4 points. First worked on during class (finished at home)
and submitted by beginning of next class period. If submitted complete and on time, it may
be resubmitted with corrections until end of unit.
(mandatory)

35-50 worksheet problem sets- you should do most of the problems. Not graded.
Why work the problems: 1) you are practicing solving the problems and fixing it in your
brain. 2) You are practicing for the quiz at the end of the next class.
(OPTIONAL-not graded)

Quizzes at the end of each class, each worth 4 points, cannot be resubmitted (mandatory)

internal assessment project related activities (mostly writing), 4+ points

(mandatory)

Quizzes graded 0-4. (Work must be shown)

0- did not submit or did very little
1- Completed most, but many errors, needs extended conversation with Mr.Braga.
2- A few errors, needs a brief chat with the teacher
3- One error, a written comment should be enough to attain full understanding
4- perfect understanding

These grades (traditional EAC 0-100, 60 passing) are important for non-Brazilian college acceptance.
The policy may be adapted during the year to fit the class.

Anticipated and Predicted IB grade: estimated from IB-like summative comprehensive

assessments (IB 1-7), important for non-Brazilian college acceptance.

Late policy: For summative work (not exams), 10 points off for up to 3 school days late, 50 points off
after that, until the close of the unit. After the close of the unit, the work is no longer accepted for
credit.

Retake policy:
There are no retakes, however, at the end of every semester, there will be a summative
comprehensive final covering all IB math subjects since the first day, (similar to an IB exam) and this
grade, besides counting as an additional summative grade, may be used to replace 1 lower unit
summative grades.
Materials to bring every day:
laptop, charger, adapter
Headphones (used to watch videos as necessary)
microphone internal or external (can keep in your locker, used to record audio or video)
your own GDC graphical display calculator (TI-84 Plus suggested)
paper notebook
pencil
eraser
short ruler or straight edge
textbook (can keep in your locker or at home) - install electronic version on your laptop

Student Expectations:
Buy (if needed) and bring class materials
Use classtime wisely. Why do at home what you could have done in class?
Honor Code
classroom norms when...
moving into, inside, and out of the classroom (arrive on time- 3 tardies is an absence now)
talking and listening in the classroom
interacting with others in the classroom
working in the classroom (no cellphones)

Homework club day: Mondays.

Feedback Pledge: All assessments will be graded by and its discussion will take place in the
following week of it.
