The Abstract of the Research Paper

1. What is an abstract? How does your group intend to write your abstract? (10 points)

According to the Dictionary, Merriam Webster, an abstract is the making of a summary of

the main parts of a report, speech, research, article, etc. An Abstract is a descriptive overview of a
paper, according to the book. An abstract contains the topic and goal of a specific paper work, it
may also contain the results and recommendation at the same time, and all these summed up in
one paragraph. The purpose of an Abstract is for readers to be able to know the content of the
paper, and if it fits their interest and purpose.

First, in writing the objective, the researchers must state the problem that wants to be solved
and issues to be explore and It might be a research questions. The purpose of the study is to solve
this/these problem. Second, in writing the methods, this section of abstract must explain the
manner or how the problems were solved and issues were explored identified as the main objective.
Third, in writing the results, it must provide the outcomes of the work done so far. It doesn’t
necessarily important that the figures and tables are indicated. Lastly, in writing the conclusion, it
must convince the readers that the research paper is interesting and worth reading for. Also,
conclusion section must provide its contributions to the field.

2. What importance does the abstract play in the overall picture of the research paper? (10
points)

Abstract plays an important role in the overall picture of a research paper, because it is a
brief introduction of your paper work which the reader will read first and it is a way to introduce
your work in an interesting and unique way to attract a reader’s attention by giving them special
ideas about the content of your research paper. According to Peter Gill, most researchers and
clinicians only read the abstracts of research studies. This is true even when they diligently search
out and find the original article that inspired a news headline. People are busy and pressed for time;
skimming abstracts is an efficient way to stay up-to-date with research findings without onerously
sifting through pages of details. People want the bottom line. But this approach inherently relies
on journals to ensure accuracy in abstract reporting. That is why it is important that the abstract is
well formulated and written.

3. What are the three important elements that any abstract from any discipline contains?
(10 points)

The three important elements of an abstract that should be strictly written adequately are:
the focus of your paper, its scope, and method. For instance, according to University of Wisconsin,
abstracts in the hard sciences and social sciences often put more emphasis on methods than do
abstracts in the humanities; humanities abstracts often spend much more time explaining their
objective than science abstracts do. Another, according to the University of North Carolina, an
abstract of a social science or scientific work may contain the scope, purpose, results, and contents
of the work. An abstract of a humanities work may contain the thesis, background, and conclusion
of the larger work. However, even within single disciplines, abstracts often differ. To conclude,
focusing on different elements in formulating an abstract varies upon discipline.
