Lesson 10: Challenges to Modern Filipino Family (pp. 182-184)

i. Focus Question:
a. What are the different challenges that Filipino families experience nowadays?
b. How do these challenges become relevant to the Social Sciences in the real world?
I. Family
 a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household
 came from the Latin word “familia” meaning household under one head
 group of people related either by consanguinity (by recognized birth), affinity (by marriage or other
relationship), or co-residence
 according to Belen Medina, a sociologist, family is an interdisciplinary study

II. Challenges to Modern Filipino Family


1. Financial Problem- a situation where money worries are causing you stress
 According to the survey of attitudes towards the Australian health system carried out by
the Menzies Centre for Health Policy at the University of Sydneyi, families under
financial stress are more likely to suffer poorer health.
2. Broken Family- one parent is absent, usually due to divorce or desertion
 A broken family can affect large aspect of a person. The following are some of those
aspects:
a. Emotional
Children of all ages may seem tearful or depressed, which is a state that can last for
several years after a child’s parents’ have separated, explains psychologist Lori
Rappaport.

b. Educational
Separation of the parents have big impact to students’ education that it can lead to
poor educational outcomes.
c. Social
Some children act their distress about their broken family by being aggressive and
also bullying.
3. Domestic Violence- is violence or other abuse by one person against another in a domestic
setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation
a. Physical

-Bruises

-Involuntary shaking

-Changes in eating and sleeping patterns

-Sprained or broken wrists

b. Mental
- Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD (including flashbacks, nightmares, sevre
anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts)
-depression (including suicidal thoughts and/or attempt)
-low self esteem
c. Emotional
-hopelessness
-feeling unworthy
-having trust issues or inability to trust
-unmotivated
4. Parental absenteeism
 Affects their children in their academic studies, child’s behavior, and personal
development as well.
5. Lack of Communication- a failure to exchange information or happenings about themselves
6. Lack of Discipline and Respect

7. Peer Pressure- the effect on an individual who gets encouraged to follow their peers by
changing their attitudes, values or behaviors to conform to those of the influencing group or
individual
8. Gender Roles- how we’re expected to act, speak, dress, groom, and conduct ourselves based
upon our assigned sex
