Problem Set 1

1.) The floor system of an apartment building

consists of a 100-mm-thick reinforced
concrete slab resting on three steel floor
beams, which in turn are supported by two
steel girders, as shown in the figure. The
areas of cross section of the beams and the
girders are 11,800 mm² and 21,100 mm²,
respectively. Determine the following:
a.) Dead load acting on the beam CD
b.) Dead load acting on the girder AE.
c.) If a 150-mm-thick brick wall, which is 2.1 m
high and 7.5 m long, bears directly on the
top of beam CD. Determine the dead load acting on beam CD

Unit Weights of Construction Materials

Concrete = 23.6 kN/m³
Steel = 77.0 kN/m³
Brick = 18.8 kN/m³

2.) The roof system of an office building

consists of a 100 mm-thick reinforced
concrete slab resting on four steel beams (A
= 10,450 mm²), which are supported by two
steel girders (A = 27,700 mm²). The girders,
in turn, are supported by four columns, as
shown in the figure. Determine the
following:
a.) Dead load acting on girder AG
b.) If live load is applied with the intensity of 1
kN/m², determine the load acting on the
beam EF
c.) The load acting upon Girder AG
d.) The reaction at column A

3.) The beam is loaded with a uniform load of 20

kN/m and two concentrated loads of 50 kN as
shown in the figure. Determine the following:
a.) The value of the “W” kN/m so that it will be in
equilibrium.
b.) The maximum moment of the beam
c.) Location of the nearest point of inflection from A.
4.) The given frame shown is pin connected at A
and supported by a roller at C. It is subjected to
a concentrated load of 60 kN at the midspan of
BC and a horizontal uniformly distributed
wind load of 40 kN/m. Determine the
following:
a.) The reaction at C
b.) The reaction at A
c.) The maximum moment of the frame

5.) For the given section, determine the following:

a.) Moment of Inertia along x-axis
b.) Moment of Inertia along y-axis
c.) Neutral Axis along x-axis and y-axis

6.) For the given section, determine the

following:
a.) Moment of Inertia along x-axis
b.) Moment of Inertia along y-axis
c.) Neutral Axis along x-axis and y-axis
7.) A truck and trailer combination crossing a 12-m
span has axle loads of 10, 20, and 30 kN separated
respectively by distances of 3 and 5 m. Determine the
following:
a.) The maximum moment value.
b.) The maximum shear value.
c.) The center of gravity of the loadings

8.) Determine the reactions in the supports and the maximum shear and moment values through
illustrating the shear and moment diagram.

9.) A truck with axle loads of 40 kN and 60 kN on a wheel base of 5 m rolls across a 10-m span. Compute the
following:

a.) maximum bending moment

b.) the maximum shearing force.

10.) a.) Compute the value of deflection at the point where moment is applied when E = 200 GPa.
b.) Compute the value of slope at the point where the uniform load starts (left support) when
E = 140 GPa.
