GENERAL
The Caproco standard retractable access fitting
assembly provides access to systems operating at
pressures up to 1,500 psi, eliminating any need for
system shutdown in order to obtain vital corrosion
data.
The design of the low pressure access fitting
assembly allows the installation, removal and
maintenance of a wide range of probes, coupon
holders and reference cells to be accomplished in a
safe and easy manner.
APPLICATION
The stuffing box contains a Teflon packing to
ensure a proper seal, and locking ferrules to hold the
monitoring device in position during operation.
The union provides a method of releasing
pressure trapped above the closed valve and also
eases change-out of the monitoring equipment.
All monitoring devices come equipped with an
integrated blow out preventor that prevents the
monitoring device from coming completely out of the
access fitting.
For safety and ease of operation, the use of a
Caproco Low Pressure Retractor is recommended for
systems operating above 300 psi. Various sizes of
retractors are available; the size required is
dependent on the maximum length of probe or
coupon holder to be used.
TEE OPTION
Caproco offers a tee retractable access fitting that
incorporates a bleed nipple option. The nipple,
available in either threaded or socket welded
configurations, permits the operator to depressure the
access fitting assembly after retraction and drain any
trapped fluid safely to a suitable containment
location. The bleed option also acts as a safety
backup, allowing the operator to verify that the
primary valve has contained line pressure before
loosening-off the union.

DESCRIPTION PART NUMBER
GENERAL
The Caproco Retriever and Service Valve are
designed to install and retrieve internal corrosion
monitoring equipment within an operating system while
under full working pressure (up to 3,600 psi / 24.8 MPa).
A 6,000 psi (41.4 MPa) model is also available. The key
components to the Caproco Retrievable System, the
Retriever and Service Valve are versatile tools with a
proven history of reliable and safe performance in field
applications.
Both the retriever and service valve have been
specifically designed for the purpose of retrieval under
pressure through a 2" access fitting body, and
incorporate many features to ensure that the equipment
may be used safely, swiftly and without difficulty.
RETRIEVER
The retriever's main components are manufactured
from stainless steel, and receive a chroming treatment
for resistance to mechanical / corrosion damage and to
ensure many years of reliable service. Seven standard
sizes of retrievers are offered to cover most service
requirements, while custom-ordered sizes are available
upon request.
The retriever works on a pressure-balanced
principle. This safety feature ensures that in the event of
sudden pressure release from the system, the retriever
will not telescope.
The Caproco retriever is designed to operate strictly
under mechanical principles, and the number of turns to
completely seat or retract a component is a known
constant. This allows the operator to have complete
control over installation or removal, and is a distinct
advantage over other models of retriever / access
systems.
SERVICE VALVE
The service valve’s compact length of 9" (23 cm)
makes it easy to handle and store. One of its safety
features is its two bleed valve design. One valve bleeds
to atmosphere and supplements the bleed valve on the
retriever, ensuring that the pressure within the assembly
may be released. The second bleed valve bypasses the
service valve's ball, which allows pressure in the
retriever assembly to build up smoothly, preventing the
assembly from being unnecessarily shocked. This also
allows the ball of the valve to be opened easily, since
the valve seats are no longer under load.
The service valve provides a temporary seal at the ORDERING INFORMATION

GENERAL
The Caproco Retriever and Service Valve are
designed to install and retrieve internal corrosion
monitoring equipment within an operating system while
under full working pressure (up to 6,000 psi / 41.4 MPa).
A 3,600 psi (24.8 MPa) model is also available. The key
components to the Caproco Retrievable System, the
Retriever and Service Valve are versatile tools with a
proven history of reliable and safe performance in field
applications.
The service valve provides a temporary seal at the ORDERING INFORMATION
access point while the monitoring device is removed for 1) Determine the maximum length of holder/probe

High Pressure Hot Tap
Drilling Machine (3,600 PSI)
GENERAL
The Caproco High Pressure Hot Tap is a
specialized tool designed to bore into a fully-
pressurized pipe or vessel (up to 3,600 PSI / 24.8
Mpa) via a high pressure access fitting. Once the
hole is drilled, the access fitting can be used as an
entry point where internal corrosion monitoring
equipment can be exposed to the operating system.
The hot tap tool is used in conjunction with the
Caproco Retriever and Service Valve.
The drilling machine offers a safe and reliable
means of drilling a clean hole without distortion. Its
design provides ample cutter-travel to allow hot
tapping through all standard access fitting lengths and
pipe wall thicknesses. The cutter can be driven
manually with a rachet-type socket wrench, electric
motor or air-driven motor.
APPLICATION
The procedure that is followed when an access
fitting is attached, tested and hot tapped under
pressure, is outlined below.
The first step is to determine the wall thickness
of the vessel or pipe (an ultrasonic thickness tester
may be used), ensuring that the cutter length of the
hot tap is sufficient to penetrate the pipe wall
thickness.
The access fitting is then welded onto the
structure and the weld is pressure tested using the
hydrostatic test assembly.
The hot tap hollow plug is threaded into the
access fitting and tightened using a spanner wrench.
The drill is now lowered to the surface wall and a
clean hole is cut by turning the drive nut, either with a
socket wrench or by connecting a motor.
Once the drilling is complete, the drilling machine
can be detached from the hot tap hollow plug and
taken off the access fitting, leaving the hollow plug in
place to maintain the seal. The Caproco Service
Valve and Retriever is attached to the access fitting,
and the hot tap hollow plug is removed. The access
fitting is swabbed and flushed, and a normal solid or
hollow plug and monitoring device can be installed.

Dual Disc Coupon Holder
Retrievable
GENERAL
Caproco has designed a dual disc coupon holder
assembly that offers the same advantages as the
standard flush disc coupon holder, with the added
advantage of trap monitoring.
The coupon flush with the pipe wall monitors
conditions along the pipe wall. By locating the
access fitting at the bottom of the line (6 O’Clock)
position, the access fitting acts like a liquid trap, so
that the second coupon measures conditions of
trapped liquids. This allows operators to measure the
effects of any standing liquid or “low spots” in the line.
APPLICATION
With the use of the Caproco access fitting,
retriever and service valve, the dual disc coupon ORDERING INFORMATION

with Teflon spacers to insulate the coupons from each
other while providing the correct orientation in the line.
SPECIFICATIONS
Caproco dual disc coupon holders are
manufactured from 316 stainless steel.
GENERAL
The multiple disc coupon holder assembly offers
the same advantages as standard disc coupon
holders, with the added advantage of multiphase
monitoring. Multiphase monitoring becomes important
in a system where line conditions may promote non-
uniform corrosion rates.
Multidisc coupon holders can be used to monitor
a variety of locations, such as:
1. Top of line dead gas trap
2. Flush with pipe wall
3. Top of line
4. Middle of line
5. Bottom of line
6. Bottom of line - dead liquid trap
7. Special position requirements

The holder is manufactured with an integrated
blowout preventor to stop it from coming completely
out of the access fitting.
Depending on the specific site conditions, the
access fitting may be located at any position on the

environment and provide feedback on the
effectiveness of cathodic protection systems.
The probe utilizes the electrical resistance
technique of corrosion monitoring. The ER element
is comprised of a thin walled tube, machined from a
single length of bar, which overcomes any
requirements of welding the element. Resistance
readings from the sensing element are relative to a
non-corroding reference element sealed within the
probe body.
APPLICATION
Designed to be directly buried in pipeline
trenches or under storage tanks, the Caproco soil
probe is completely sealed to prohibit the ingress of
moisture, ensuring its reliability and performance.
Each probe is supplied with a grounding cable and
when connected to the cathodic protection system via
a test post, or directly to the pipe or structure, the
effectiveness of the cathodic protection system can
be determined. To monitor the corrosivity of the
environment without the effect of a cathodic
protection system, the grounding cable is left
unconnected.
SPECIFICATIONS
Caproco soil probes are manufactured with a
phenolic body and an AISI 1018 mild steel element.
Probe elements are available in alternative materials

complete with a 10 ft (3m) cable (extra lead lengths
are available up to 1,000 ft (300m). Two types of

Probe Adaptors
GENERAL
Caproco offers a range of probe adaptors and
extension cables that provide the connection between
electronic probes and their corresponding
instrumentation.
The most common type of adaptor is the Caproco
probe extension adaptor, used with the high pressure
access system. This adaptor works with Electrical
Resistance (ER), Linear Polarization Resistance
(LPR) and Galvanic probes.
APPLICATION
The probe extension adaptor connects to the
probe through the hollow plug, and extends up past
the top of the access fitting. This allows for easy
connection to a monitoring instrument or transmitter.
Caproco instruments come supplied with a
standard 4 foot (1.2 m) extension cable; custom
length cables are available by special order.
Retractable and fixed probes do not require probe
extension adaptors.
Caproco also offers an array of adaptors allowing
the connection of probes to different types of
instrumentation, such as 6 pin MIL to 5 pin MIL.
SPECIFICATIONS
Standard probe extension adaptors are
manufactured from 316 stainless steel.
GENERAL
Caproco wire loop and tube loop electrical
resistance (ER) probes come supplied with standard
flow deflectors, which are also available as an option
for ER tubular probes. Flow deflectors serve three
primary functions:
• protect the element from physical damage,
such as a collision with hydrates or other
particles in the line
• preserves element life by blocking most of the
media flow from eroding the probe element
• allows for the attachment of corrosion
coupons with the addition of a flow deflector
with an integrated coupon holder
APPLICATION
Flow deflectors are available for either normal or
high velocity flow environments. Threaded so that
they can be attached to the probe body around the
element, the cylindrical flow deflector body has
perforations in a pattern that disperses the flowing
media, allowing only a small percentage to reach the
element at a slower rate, permitting a reading to take
place.
In situations where both electronic and coupon
corrosion monitoring is desired at a single point,
Caproco has designed flow deflectors with integrated
coupon holders.
SPECIFICATIONS
Standard flow deflectors are manufactured from
AISI 1018 mild steel or 316 stainless steel, and are
also available in alternative materials upon request.

The Caproco MIC Analyzer utilizes modern
digital electronic techniques to provide greater
sensitivity, reliability and accuracy.
Rapid test results(usually within 2 hours) are
available on the digital LCD screen, and results are
provided in three formats:
• Micromoles of Hydrogen Uptake per Minute
The level of Hydrogen uptake is directly related to
the bacterial corrosion activity.
• Micrograms of Iron Oxidized per Minute
The amount of Iron being oxidized by the bacteria
equals a corrosion rate related to bacterial
activity.
• Micrograms of H2S per Minute
The production of H2S is a by-product of the
bacterial corrosion process and can cause
severe problems to many systems. This result
indicates the amount of H2S being produced by
bacterial activity.
The analyzer connects via a cable to the
Hydrogenase test kit anaerobic chamber. Once the
readings are complete, the three results can be
scrolled through at the push of a button. The
instrument’s hand-held size and weight make it
convenient to use in both a laboratory or in the field.

GENERAL
Cathodic protection (CP) is a proven method of Sacrificial Anode
controlling and reducing corrosion of pipelines,
vessels, tanks and other structures, located both
above and below ground. The added expense of
installing CP systems is usually justified based on Impressed Current Anodes
