Assignment olympic games

Question 1.
The Mythological story behind the origins of the O.G.

Prince Pelops wished to marry King Oinomoas’ daughter. The King agreed, but only if Pelops won a
chariot race. Prince Pelops accepted the challenge. He knew that he wouldn’t win without cheating.

Right before the race he and the King’s charioteer Myrtilos secretly replaced the bronze linchpins in
the chariot from the King with wax versions. Of course the wax melted when the King wanted to pass
Pelops. Pelops married the daughter Hippodameia to celebrate his victory. Myrtilos only switched
the linchpins, because Pelops promised him to become king. Pelops didn’t want him to be the king,
so he pushed him of a cliff. Then he was afraid the Gods would kill him, so he said them that he made
them this festival. The Olympic games were born.

Question 3.
A. The program of the Olympic games was about five days. They did three days of sport,
one day of talk to Zeus and one day of giving prizes and eating together.

Day 1: The athletes needed to stand in front of the statue of Zeus and had to swore that
they will not cheat or corrupt the Olympic games.

Day 2: They had horserace and pentathlon. Horseraces were only for rich people, because
only they can pay for the race horses and the transportation to Olympia or elsewhere.
Pentathlon was a mix of discus throwing, long-jump, javelin throwing, running and wrestling.

Day 3: There were only rites for the hero Pelops and a sacrifice of hundred cows to Zeus.

Day 4: They had running and combat sports. Running was a 180 meter sprint in a stadion.
Combat sports were all ‘heavy sports.’ There were three different combat sports: wrestling,
boxing and pankration, the athletes needed to do this naked.

Day 5: This day was the prize ceremony and they were all eating together.
B. Discus-throwing is changed a bit: the discus is nowadays from iron in
the past it was form stone. The discus the had a weight of 2,5 kilo on
average, that is 0,5 kilo above the weight of a discus nowadays.

The long jump also changed a bit: in the past the jumpers held
weights in their hands to lend more steadily.

Wrestling also changed: nowadays an opponent needs to lay on his


back in the past it doesn’t matter on what part he felt.

Boxing has pretty much differences: there was no time duration,


they didn’t know weight categories (only age categories) and they
didn’t had boxing gloves so they wear leather tongs around their
knuckles.

Pankration is a mix of wrestling and boxing.

Hoplitodromos was a foot race in the Olympic games.

1. The temple of Zeus and the temple of Hera stood on the holy ground of
the altis in Olympia. The tholos of Philippos was also there.

1. In august 490 B.C. there was an Persis expedition army towards Attica.
The Greeks fought them and won. The Persis lost 6000 to 7000 people,
the Greeks only 192. Phidippides, a messenger of the Greek warriors, ran
from Marathon (were the war was) in one time to Athens. When he was
there, he said: Good news. We won! After that, he fell dead. It is
probably a myth, but to honour him, they let it be a part of the Olympic
games.
2. The distance Phidippides ran, is now the Marathon run.
3. In 1896 the measured the distance from Athens to Marathon.
4. The exact distance of the Marathon is 42.195 km.
5. It was measured from Athens to Marathon and it’s so precise because
that was the exact distance Phidippides ran.

1. The Latin motto of the modern Olympic games is citius, altius, fortius.
2. That means faster, higher, stronger.
3. The five Olympic rings can stand for the five continents, but also for the
continuity and the human being.
