What logs need to be collected for Open Systems Windows Unix or VMware issues?
What logs need to be collected for PowerPath or ScaleIO issues?

EMC support representatives need a collection of logs and configuration files in order to troubleshoot
issues on a Open Systems host.

For Windows the "EMCReports utility" is a utility specifically created to gather all logs and configuration
files from a Microsoft Windows host. EMCReports will produce a zipped output file which can be attached
to a Service Request.

For Unix and VMware the "EMCGrab utility" is a utility specifically created to gather all logs and
configuration files from a specific Unix host. EMCGrab will produce a gziped output file which can be
attached to a Service Request.

To obtain these utilities the following locations are available.

1. [ ] Download the latest EMCreport utility from the links above.
2. [ ] Download the corresponding README.txt file for the Utility you have downloaded. Ensure you
understand the workings of the EMCreport utility. If you have any questions about this utility, contact
the EMC support representative who is assigned to your Service Request.
3. [ ] Transfer the executable file to the host with the issue. No particular path or directory is
necessary. If not able to place files on the problem host, you can run the EMCrpts utility from an
alternate location. Refer to EMC Knowledgebase solution 10053 for more information Double-click
the executable to run and follow the instructions on screen.
 Note: for Windows 2008, Windows 2008-R2 and Windows 2012 we recommend running
EMCreports from an elevated command prompt.
 To open an elevated command prompt, click Start, right-click Command Prompt, and then click
Run as administrator.
4. [ ] Once the Utility is done, it will open an Explorer Window at the location of the zipped output file.
Transfer this zipped output file of your host, and attach them to your Service Request. If you do not
know how to attach to your Service Request, or if any other issue prevents you from
attaching, contact your EMC support representative who can provide you with an alternative location
for this file.
ADDITIONAL FILES:
Clustered hosts:
Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS) logs its events in a cluster.log file on each of the nodes. Unfortunately,
the log file has a maximum size and will overwrite itself to keep to this maximum size. In case of
EMCReports being taken, shortly after the incident which is being worked, the EMCReports utility will
include the cluster.log file, and no further action is needed. If EMCReports is taken a long time after the
incident, the support representative will need the cluster.log file from the nodes which contains the date
and time of the incident. This file might have to be retrieved from your normal backup.
 If your issue is on one or more nodes of a cluster, EMCReports need to be collected from all Nodes of
that cluster.

 If your issue is on one or more nodes of a cluster, the "%SYSTEMROOT%\Cluster\cluster.log" file

needs to be collected at the time of the incident.
 Note: This file will overwrite itself and must be taken immediately after the issue has occurred. Just
as for EMCReports, you must collect this file from all nodes of the cluster.
