Project Management

Definitions:
Project - is the discipline of initiating, planning,
Management executing and controlling the work to achieve
specific goals and meet specific success criteria
- the primary challenge of project
management is to achieve all of the project
goals within the given constraints
Definitions:
Critical Path - is a step-by-step project
Method (CPM) management technique for process planning that
defines critical and non-critical tasks with the
goal of preventing time-frame problems
Program - it presents a graphic illustration of a project as a
Evaluation and network diagram consisting of
Review
Technique numbered nodes (either circles or rectangles)
(PERT) representing events, or milestones in the project
linked by labelled vectors (directional lines)
representing tasks in the project
Example:
The Steffi Company is considering building a new athletic complex on campus. The
complex would provide a new gymnasium for inter-school sports activities, expanded
office space, classrooms and intramural facilities. The following activities would have
to be undertaken before construction starts.
Activity Description Immediate Predecessor

path.
c) Develop the activity

D Select architect C 5 project.
E Establish budget C 6 d) Determine the

F Finalize design D, E 14

G Obtain financing E 13 the project.
H Hire contractor F, G 7
Definitions:
Immediate - are activities that must be completed prior
Predecessor to the start of the activity in question
Float or Slacks - is the amount of time that a task in
a project management can be delayed
without causing a delay to:
(a) subsequent tasks ("free float")
(b) project completion date ("total float").

Interpret:

Therefore, the critical path is B→C → E → F → H with 45 weeks to finish the project.
It means that B, C, E, F and H are the critical activities and should be done according
to schedule or else it will cause a delay in project.
On the other hand, activity A can be extended for another 2 weeks, activity D for 1
week and activity G for 1 week because they have slack time of 2, 1, and 1
respectively.
