SPEM Assignment 2

What is variability? : Variability of products is part of our daily life. We do not want to buy just a
car—we want a car in our favorite color, with five doors, a cooling system, and a navigation
system. Hence, variability is the ability to change or customize a system.

When is variability used and why? : Let’s assume we have developed a software product that
we start selling to a small number of customers. As our product starts to become successful,
new customers are attracted. However, each customer is different and has some unique
requirements - to fulfill these requirements, we need to introduce the concept of variability in a
system so that we can make our systems more adaptable and feasible to changes in future.

One real world example which uses the concept of variability can be : The channel of conveying
important information(news) to the consumer, which can be done via 4 ways -

Newspaper - It still remains one of the oldest and most conventional ways of spreading
information amongst the mass. Newspaper is different from other medium as it is more about
the tone in which the article is written by the author, how meaningful and relevant are the
pictures, contains various advertisements ranging from matrimonial, job vacancies in
government organizations to even banners of political parties! Hence, it is a very diverse set of
information set in a crisp 25 page environment.

Television - It more about the delivery of news by an individual. Reporter’s/anchor’s voice may
indicate what kind of news you are watching, while it makes you a witness to important events in
real time, it also gives you a strong connection to people in the news.

Inshorts (mobile app) - News spread through this medium are more precise or as you can say,
accurately is targeted to that mass of the society who are none viewers of the daily news and
also do not have enough time to go through the long news articles in this fast-paced life and
work pressure.

Radio - Being one of the cheapest media which covers a huge population in a country like India,
radio can be enjoyed at home, in office, amidst the deepest of the valleys/mountains, on
beaches, while driving a car or anywhere. Since radio channels varies from region to region,
hence you can listen to the news in your regional language as well.

In all the above cases we’ve observed that even though the medium through which information
is spread is different but the end goal - conveying important information to the end user, has
been the same.
