INVERSE TIME OVERLOAD – IVT – O/L – 3

Reference: Drawing #C20213-W14

The IVT is a precise, solid state (except for output relay), overload device which is
sometimes used with Rapid Power industrial power supplies. Its tripping characteristics
are an inverse function of load current and are matched to the rating of the power supply,
i.e., 125% overload – 2hours, 200% overload – one minute, 300% overload – instantaneous.
The output relay is a latching device and once tripped, must be reset before resuming
operation.

The signal from the shunt is fed into three amplifiers which are biased off at three different
levels. As 125% overload is approached, amplifier #1 gives an output. The output is fed
into two other amplifiers. One amplifier is used to operate a relay which unclamps a
capacitor and starts a timing cycle and lights an LED on the board to indicate that time has
begun. The other amplifier is a voltage to current converter. The output of the V to I
converter is fed into a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). The output of the VCO is used to
charge a capacitor which is connected through a high impedance amplifier to another
amplifier which is biased off. When the capacitor charge reaches approximately 10V in two
hours, the bias on the final stage amplifier is overcome and its output becomes positive,
triggers and SCR which clamps a transistor off, de-energizes the output relay and shuts off
the power supply or performs some other function.

As the load is increased, the VCO frequency increases and charges the capacitor faster. At
approximately 150% overload, amplifier #2 begins to give an output to increase the
frequency even more. Values are selected so that at 200% overload the capacitor charges
in approximately one minute.

At 300% overload, amplifier #3 gives and output, however, this output bypasses the
oscillator and is fed directly to the output amplifier to shut the unit down instantaneously.
