 CHAPTER I

Introduction
All students, yet for one reason or another, at one time or other time want miss to a day of
school. The general tendency to engage in such unwillingness is referred to absenteeism. Student
Absenteeism, defined by taesley(2004) as a period of time when a student does not attend school,
has become major and continuous problem among high school students in many countries.
Indeed, numerous studies conducted to answer a question that is why high school student miss
classes. In this motion, Taesley have noted numerous risk factors that contribute to student
absenteeism such as family health, low income, poor school climate, drug and alcohol use,
transportation problems, and community attitudes towards education. Pehlivan(2006) found that
the major reason given by students for non-attendance at lecture or school were bored at school,
dislike of school and lessons, encouragement of friends, and lack of expectations about
education. Wilkins(2008) has repoted four themes, which play important role to motivate
students to attend school such as school climate, academic environment, discipline, and
relationships with teachers.

Absenteeism means that a person became persistent in being absent from work,school or
meetings. Absenteeism is already attributed not only just an attitude but also as a habit for
students of all ages. It has been said that due to internal and external factors, students commit
absences. Students are fond of getting abent due to some reasons, may it be personal or not. It
have become one of the major concerns of the teachers, school staff, parents, and by most
people. Hence many factors like flu or fever, headaches, toothaches, diseases, being bullied by a
classmate, preoccupied by household chores and being not morning person since most
schoolwork, or meetings were done in the morning, was known why these are a lot of people
were engaged in absenteeism. Students are fond of getting absent due to some reasons, may it be
personal or not.Most people said that if you are not feeling well, you cannto concentrate or focus
in what you are doing since your mind was set to what you are feeling or you can be distracted
by the aches you feel.

The internal factors includes late riser,personal concerns, health realated concerns, and dislike or
non-interest of the subject. Then the external factors would be proximity, due fulfillment of
another subject/course, extra- curricular activities, financial problem, peer pressure and related
concerns.There is a need to study this problem in order to know and understand the deeper sense
and reasons behind why students are lazy enough in attending classes.College students are the
ones in the line of showing laziness in attending classes resulting to failure due to absences.
College is said to be the part wherein we build blocks for a better and stable future. A survey of
547 Iowa School Prinipals showed that 58% reduce grades for excessive absences (Barlett
Vol.16). As a student, they must attend the class regulary unless otherwise there is an emergency
situation which would be considered as a valid reason for his or her absences. In a student
handbook of Ateneo De Naga Univesrsity, attendance is part of the requirement for all courses
and subject, student absenteeism has been a problem for years of different institutions, schools,
and colleges. Therefore they are………………………………..

Statement of the Problem

The study is about the factors and solutions resulting to absences of Senior High Students in

Ateneo De Naga University. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the underlying factors behind absenteeism among the grade11 students in
Ateneo De Naga University?
2. What are the possible coping mechanism to avoid the absences of Grade 11 students
in Ateneo De Naga University?

Significance of the Study

This study determined the online and offline political engagement of college students in

Naga City. Moreover, this particular portion presents the possible group of people or institutions

that would benefit from this study and they are the following:

Ateneo De Naga University This result of study will give an insight to the Ateneo De
Naga University on how they will encourage students to be active in class. The Ateneo De
Naga University can analyze the results drawn from research and draw new methods in engaging
with the students, for instance, through encouragement to go to school.

Senior High School This study will give Senior High School an idea of how they will
participate more in school. The Results shall help them how going to school is important and
how being absent can affect their study.
 Teachers This study will give the teachers how they will engaged their students are when
it comes to study in school. The results shall help them adjusting their teaching strategies to suit
the aim of making students more actively engaged in class.

Definition of Terms
Absenteeism tendency to be away from work or school without a good reason : the
practice or habit of being absent from work or school
