INTRODUCTION

Good morning everyone my name is Avalon Harry and I am a second year nursing student at

Costaatt. It a great privilege to be here this morning I am here to educate everyone about

Gonorrhea. I will start my session be defining the term Gonorrhea, stating it how it is contracted,

I will go on to identify the causative agent and list some symptoms associated with Gonorrhea

and further explain the treatment of the disease and how contracting this disease can be

prevented. This is a topic of great importance and I hope that everyone learns from this session.
Objectives:

1. Define the term Gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a highly contagious sexually transmitted STD bacterial infection,

sometimes referred to as the clap. Gonorrhea is characterized by thick discharge from the

penis or vagina.

2. How is Gonorrhea contracted?

Gonorrhea spreads through semen or vaginal fluids during unprotected sexual contact,

heterosexual or homosexual, with an infected partner:

o vaginal or anal sex with an infected partner

o oral sex, although this is less common

o sharing sex toys

o touching parts of the body with fingers (for example, touching the private parts

and then the eyes)

o any very close physical contact

o the bacteria can be passed from hand to hand (very rare isolated cases)

o from a mother to her baby at birth

3. List the causative agent?

4. List four symptoms associated with Gonorrhea in men and women?

Gonorrhea Symptoms in Women

o strong smelling vaginal discharge that may be thin & watery or thick &

yellow/green

o abnormal vaginal bleeding

o possibly some low abdominal or pelvic tenderness

o pain or a burning sensation when passing urine

Gonorrhea Symptoms in Men

o white, yellow or green thick discharge from the tip of the penis

o inflammation of the testicles & prostate gland

o irritation or discharge from the anus

o urethral itch & pain or burning sensation when passing urine

5. State its treatment?

Treatment for a gonorrhea infection without complications includes oral antibiotic

medication, such as cefixime or ceftriaxone. It is also important to abstain from sexual

activity until the infection is cured and to treat all sexual partners, even if they have no

symptoms.

6. Explain how it can be prevented?

Preventive measures include abstaining from sexual activity or having sex only within a

mutually monogamous relationship in which neither partner is infected with gonorrhea or

another sexually transmitted disease. Latex condoms also provide some protection when

used properly

Evaluation: Can anyone tell me what Gonorrhea is?

What are two symptoms of Gonorrhea?

Can anyone state the causative agent?

How is it treated?

What step can be taken to prevent Gonorrhea?
