1. Hyd rogen peroxide (H202) solutions are available commercially in various concentrations.
In this exercise you will be required to determine the actual concentration or H 0 in a commercial
: 2
sample. This wiII be done by titrating a DILUTED sample of the commercial H 02 with aqueous
2
potas·ium manganate (VII) (KMnO) in the presence of aqueous sulphuric acid (H2S04).
MATERIALS:
SOLUTION A: 150 cm3 of an aqueous solution of KMn0 containing 0.01 mol dm-3.

•
accurately dilu ting 25 cm1 of the commercial H202 with distilled water
ro ma ke 1 dm3 of solution.
PROCEDURE:
A. Ri nse the burette provided with a small porlion or Solution A and then fill the
burette with Solution A.
B. U s ing a pipette filler, pipette 25 (20) cm3 of So lution B in t o a 250 cm1 conical
flask.
C. Using a measudng cylinder. add 25 em' or Solution C to the conical flask. Swirl
to ensure thorough mixing or the conterH · or the flask.
D. Titrate the contents of the llask with Solution A. When titrating, swirl the flask
constantly until the first sign of a faint permanent pink colour appears in the
flask.

(b) You are required to use your results recorded in Table above to determine the
concentration of H202 in the COMMERCIAL sample.
The ionic equation for the reaction occutTing between Solutions A and B in the presence
of acid (Solution C) is as follows:
3
cm of Solution A contains _____ moles of MnO4-.

3. The ashes, obtained from the burning of plant material, were used as cleansing agents by the
Babylonians more than 4000 years ago. The detergent properties of these plant ashes are due to the
presence of alkaline materials such as sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate. Interest in the
use of these plant ashes as skin cleansers is now being renewed.
The follow ing shows part labels taken from three plant ash extracts being sold in a herbal shop for
use as skin cleansing agents.
Plan and design an experiment to determine whether the carbonate content of the cleansers as
advertised is accurate.
