A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS V

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the pupils are expected to:
a. Add mixed number and fraction with the same denominators;
b. Add mixed number and fraction with dissimilar denominators; and
c. Answer exercises depicting at least 70% level of proficiency.

II. Subject Matter:

a. Topic: ADDING FRACTION AND MIXED NUMBER

b. References: Liking Mathematics in the Grade School, Mathematics Book Gr. V
c. Materials: power point presentation, chalk, worksheets, vocabulary cards
d. Value: Small parts are necessary to make-up a whole.

III. Procedure:

a. Pre-assessment

1. Prayer

Good morning class, please all rise for our opening prayer. Earl Jonel, please
lead the prayer. (The pupils are praying.)
Good morning class? (Good morning teacher Ejay, good morning Sir Hannival,
good morning classmates, good moring.) Everybody take a sit.

2. Checking of attendance

Before anything else, let me check your attendance for this morning. Please say
“present” if your name is called.

3. Setting of Standards

Everybody eyes on me! (Eyes on you!) very well! Before anything else, let me
set my rules inside this classroom especially in times like this. First, please pay
attention whenever someone is talking in front. Second, please be on your seats,
behave and pay attention. Third, do not make unnecessary noises and/or chat
with your seatmates. Fourth, please participate actively during class discussion.
Fifth, do your very best and have fun learning.

4. Review:

Let the teacher review the previous lesson.

b. Lesson Proper:

1. Motivation:

Let the teacher flash the vocabulary cards then paste it on the board.

2. Presentation:

Have you ever eaten a hot cake before? (Yes!)

During your recess, when you buy hot cakes in the canteen, do you buy it whole
or piece by piece? (Piece by piece.)
If you buy eight pieces of hot cakes with equal sizes then put it all together
would you create a whole? (Yes.)
(Let the teacher present a picture of an 8 pieces hot cakes then put it all together
to form a whole.)
*As you can see, 8 pieces of hot cakes can make a whole hot cake. When one
piece is missing, it cannot be whole.

3. Discussion:

Our lesson for today is related to that hot cake. One whole hot cake cannot be
whole if one piece is missing. This is what we call FRACTION.
So, in this lesson, we will discuss and solve about adding mixed number with
like and unlike denominators.

*To add fractions with similar denominators, we add the numerator and write
the sum over the same denominator.
*To add fractions with dissimilar denominators, first find the smallest
equivalent factions by using the least common multiple (LCD) to rename the
dissimilar fractions into similar fractions and then proceed in adding fractions
with the same denominators.
*To add mixed numbers with dissimilar denominators, change dissimilar
fractions to similar fractions. Add the whole numbers and then the numerators
and copy the denominators.

(After the discussion, teacher will have the pupils do board work.)

4. Generalization:

*To add fractions with similar denominators, we add the numerator and write
the sum over the same denominator.
*To add fractions with dissimilar denominators, first find the smallest
equivalent factions by using the least common multiple (LCD) to rename the
dissimilar fractions into similar fractions and then proceed in adding fractions
with the same denominators.
*To add mixed numbers with dissimilar denominators, change dissimilar
fractions to similar fractions. Add the whole numbers and then the numerators
and copy the denominators.
(Let the teacher clarify the concept in adding mixed number with like and unlike
denominators.)

5. Application:

GROUP ACTIVITY:

Class, I will divide you into three groups where you have to answer the
worksheets assigned to you. The worksheet and the materials are inside the
envelope all you have to do is to work with your group and help one another in
solving the given equation. I will only give you eight minutes to finish your
activity then paste your outputs on the board.
(Let the individual groups do the activity.)

IV. Evaluation:

Directions: Add the following mixed number with like and unlike denominators. (5
points each.)

1. 4 ½ + 1 ½

2. 7 2/6 + 5 1/12
V. Assignment:

Directions: Solve the following equation by adding mixed numbers with like and unlike
denominators.

1. 2 ¼ + 3 ½
2. 10 ¾ + 2 ¼
3. 5 9/10 + 8 2/5
