Introduction

Most people know that bullying is wrong. Bullying is said to be

the act of intentionally causing harm to others, through verbal
harassment, physical assault, or other more subtle methods of
concercion such as manipulation. Bullying in school is also
referred as peer abuse. In colloquial speech, bullying often
describes a form of “harassment” perpetrated by an abuser who
possesses more physical or social power and dominance. The victim
of bullying is sometimes referred as the “target”. Harassment can
be verbal, physical or emotional. Bullies hurt people verbally
and physically. There are many reasons for that, one of them is
because the bullies themselves are or have been the victim of
bullying. But the main question is, how does this affect one’s
life?

Back in 2005,Smokowski and Kopasz concluded that “Bullying is a

serious threat not only to those involved, but also to the entire
school environment.” They also found that, “Bullying creates
short and long-term consequences for both the victim and the
bully. Victims may suffer from low self-esteem, loneliness,
depression, anxiety, absenteeism and academic difficulties.” In
2010, Harlow and Roberts found that interventions that increase
protective factors, such as impulse control and attachment to
family, reduce bullying victimization.

It’s been said that teenagers who do not get attention or

emotional support at home may try to get noticed even in negative
ways. To do this, they may try to become the center of attention
by humiliating someone else.

The researchers want to inform and alarm every school about

students’ safety and behavior for they also want their second
home to be a wonderful place where everyone can learn anything.

I
Background of the Survey

The researchers conducted a survey for it was one of their

performance task in Mathematics. The survey was all about
bullying and only the eighth graders except 8-Integrity which is
the section who conducted surveys was required to answer. The
survey contains 5 questionnaires.

According to DepEd, based on a cycle of 201 school days, this

translates to at least 31 incidents of bullying everyday. A total
of 6,363 cases of bullying in public as well as private,
elementary and highschools were recorded in 2014, up nearly 21
percent versus 5,236 documented in 2013.

The researchers chose bullying as their topic so that they could

recommend some ideas on how to prevent bullying.
Methodology

The setting of this survey was in classrooms of Grade 8 students

in The Lewis College. The classes that were surveyed were
selected by Mr. Ardie Dolot. The researchers who conducted the
survey stood in front of the class, explained their intention and
handed out the surveys. Names in this survey are optional but
each participant must put their gender. After the answering of
surveys, data were gathered and compiled. Data were analyzed
using quantitative methodology. The anonymity of the students was
protected by putting optional at names on the survey so that if
they do not want the researchers to know who they are, the
researchers would never be able to be identify them. The benefits
of this survey gained knowledge of bullying on campus so if there
was a large issue there could be means to stop this in the
future.
Recommendation

What can the school personnel do to prevent bullying?

- They should make a “bully box” where a student can drop a

note to alert teachers and administration about bullies.
- School staff and administration must be trained in bullying
prevention and intervention.
- Post signs about bullying prohibition and listing the
consequences.
- Inform parents of both victims and bullies when a
confrontation occur

What can students do?

- Students must not engage the bully. Most bullies are looking
for a reaction from their victims. Lack of a response can
help to extinguish the bullying behaviors.
- Report instances of bullying to parents or teachers.
-
Conclusion

Based on the researchers’ presentation, most of the students are

being bullied because of their physical appearance and social
status in life. Most of them are being bullied by their
classmates so we can conclude that bullying happen often in
schools. In this research, the researchers concluded that the
result of their survey tells that boys are often being bullied
than girls maybe because boys are more powerful than girls or
they have more power to physically hurt someone.
