Concept: What is Leadership?

Group Activity

Discuss leadership in relation to management. Are they the same or different? Do

so that we come up with a nurse who is a leader-manager?

Using Table 1 determine how many of the listed and added roles are also recognized
as nursing roles. Why are they considered such?

Concept: Theories of Leadership

Answer the following questions.

1. What makes a leader a real leader?

 True leaders know who they are and what they stand for. They know their
values and the rules they will abide by, regardless of the circumstances they face.
They allow their people to understand the values they are committed to uphold,
which lays a foundation for the rules their people will be expected to adhere to.
True leaders both know and communicate their values openly with the people
they lead, creating an atmosphere of certainty and trust.
2. In the list of traits below, just select one to describe a real leader. Then, explain why
you choose that trait.

Traits of a Leader
Humble Respectful Wise
Sincere Experienced Natural
Honest Ethical Compassionate
Trustworthy Religious Educated
Intelligent Loving Hardworking
Service-oriented Caring Good listener
Responsible Open Assertive
Kind
 Responsible. Because a true leader should be responsible in every way. He/she
should be responsible to all the things he/she do or say. He/she must show to
his/her colleague that he/ she knows how to handle problems and responsible
enough to every actions that he made.

3. As a nursing student or would-be nurse, what trait or traits would you like to
develop? Why?
As a nursing student, the trait that I would like to develop is being on time. I know that this
is my weakness being late every time. I will try my best to improve and start a change from
now on. I will not come to school late and even in the future of becoming a nurse.
4. Name a nurse whom you know personally and consider as an outstanding leader.
State why he/she is such.
Sir Czerwin Juales RN, MAN

Concept: Leadership Styles

Answer the following questions.

1. In your own words, explain the term “leadership style.”

Leadership style is a method used by the leader to influence his subordinates. It it’s
his way to implement, plan and providing direction for the good of everybody.
2. In dealing with others, do you tend to be domineering, open-minded or permissive?
Explain your answers.
 In dealing with others I tend to be open-minded. I let people give or make their own
suggestions or comments and be open to listen to them. Because being open minded
means you are not limiting only for your own self about making decision rather you
consult everybody and get their opinions.
3. Which of the style do you personally experience at home, in school, in your
community or in society at large?
 The style that I experienced in school is Transformational Leadership.
