LANGUAGE ARTS SYLLABUS 7ABC I BIMESTER 2019-2020

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Language Arts class continues to develop English language skills in the areas of oral
reading, reading comprehension strategies, vocabulary building and mainly increase
background knowledge through literary work. These skills will be taught, practiced and
reinforced through five categories: vocabulary, Reading comprehension strategies, Reading
comprehension skills, and Writing skills. This year a grammar workshop will be included.
The HEART of the Language Arts Program where every other skill and strategy will
depend on the genre students are currently reading.

Students are required to complete most of the activities in the classroom, homework
assignments will be requested as to enhance the learning process. Applying reading
strategies and reading comprehension skills is our main goal. Quizzes will be created based
on the book we have read during the quarter which will include: vocabulary, reading
comprehension skills and strategies. Students are responsible to bring their books and their
materials to class every day. Because this course is class work based, students will not have
a final quarter exam.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Reads two different gothic novels with similar historical context

2. Compare (and contrast) literary elements across stories, including plots, settings and
characters.

3. Describe characters (e.g., traits, roles, similarities) within literary selection.

4. Identify characteristics of historical context of the books (namely Gothic genre,


Victorian Era, Epistle novels, etc.)

5. Infer by reading between the lines to determine a character's motivation and personality,
to discover themes, and to identify the main points in informal texts.

6. Asks and responds to questions (e.g., about the meaning of a story, about the meaning of
words or ideas, underlying information, etc.)

7. Identify and develop proper sentence and paragraph structure

8. Write fully developed, well-structured informative essays

EXPECTED COURTESY

1. Be seated with all materials and supplies when class begins.


2. Complete all assignments on time.
3. Listen while others are speaking.
4. Respect each other’s opinions, space, and belongings.
5. Speak English at all times.
English must be spoken at all times, this includes among the students and anywhere
they stand on the school grounds, 10% are assigned for this aspect in every class.

ATTENDANCE AND MAKE UP POLICY

All assignments and evaluations will be made up one week after absentee, as long as you
bring an appropriate excuse. After this you will not be able to make it up.
