Utilizing the E-Learning Through the use of GENYO for
Learning Development of Students in St. Mary’s
Academy of Sta. Ana, Manila
E-Learning is defined as, learning by utilizing electronic technology to access educational
curriculum outside of a traditional classroom. In most cases, it refers to a course, program or
degree delivered completely online. (elearningnc) hasn’t been around for that long, but
recently the hype of it has started to grow. Educational technology is the effective use of
technological tools in learning. As a concept, it concerns an array of tools, such as media,
machines and networking hardware, as well as considering theoretical perspectives for their
effective application (Brückner, 2015). In simpler terms, Educational Technology is being able to
access education or being able to learn through the use of modern day technology, like
websites, online classes, and different gadgets. This then brings us to e-learning or electronic
learning which is a common platform or a more common term of educational technology.

With these advances in education, there will of course be different benefits or advantages. A
benefit of e-learning is being able to learn or to educate yourself from the comfort of your own
room, or being able to quickly look back on past lessons that you need to review on or catch up
on. When schools use e-learning websites or platforms, they are also helping the environment
by helping the students reduce their use of paper, for instead of having students write notes or
assignments on a notebook or piece of paper, students can easily just go online and look up the
lessons or assignments that the teacher will put on the website.

St. Mary’s Academy of Sta. Ana Manila, as of school year 2019-2020, has been starting to use
GENYO e-learning with their students ranging from grades 1-10. By doing this, not only have
they made doing assignments or catching up with missed lessons easier for the students, but
the school has made it more fun for the students, for in GENYO the students may play different
games depending on their grade level and depending on what subject they are looking at. In
GENYO, students are also able to interact with their classmates through messages. The teachers
will also be able to upload quizzes, assignments, and lessons for their students to do look
through. By St. Mary’s implementing GENYO there is a chance that the students be more active
or more punctual when it comes to doing or handing in their assignments. The students will
also be able to gain easier access to reviewers during exam season if ever their teacher were to
post or upload any on GENYO. Although St. Mary’s Academy is only using, as of the current
school year, Blended Learning which is “combing classroom and online
education”(TeachThought Staff , 2018), by letting teachers and students use GENYO, the school
is able to effectively add e-learning into their yearly curriculum by letting students “have a
taste” of what the future may be like in terms of their education.

Therefore, this research will study on how teachers and students utilize the use of this
educational technology or e-learning through the use of GENYO. This research will study about
the way that GENYO can help in the learning development of students. The researchers will
seek the various help of this e-learning in different aspects of studying that may depend on
every subject.

INTRODUCTION
Educational Technology or E-Learning is the use of modern day technology for learning
purposes whether it be in a classroom or at home. When it comes to teaching, it is best to use
thing or ways that they can easily access or can be interested in which for the current
generation means using technology. For their study, a group of researchers have decided to do
a study on the utilization of GENYO e-learning for learning development of students in St.
Mary’s Academy of Sta. Ana Manila. What is GENYO? Some may ask, well GENYO e-Learning is a
technology-based supplementary instructional material that will be used in classroom teaching
in both grade school and high school. With students getting accustomed or used to using
technology in their daily lives it is important for schools to keep up with the evolutions of
technology so that they will be able to keep up with the interests of the students and be able to
get the students to focus on learning.

GENYO is a learning management system developed by Diwa Learning Systems Inc. for schools
around the Philippines may use for their students learning in school and “Learners nowadays
really engage in technology. We use GENYO as a way to motivate them to learn their lesson
easily, especially in Math. I use it to help my learners appreciate my subject,” as stated by Sara
Jane D. Pillerva who is a math teacher from Immaculate Heart of Mary in Paranaque. As of
school year 2019-2020, St. Mary’s Academy of Sta. Ana Manila has implemented GENYO e-
learning into the current years curriculum giving teachers a chance to teach or to test their
students with or through GENYO. Many schools in the Philippines, especially in the provinces,
may not want to use e-learning with their schools for it goes against their norms or goes against
what they are used to, but that is why a group of researchers have decided to make a study on
this so that if other schools see that using GENYO will do more good for the students learning
development, they might be more open to the idea of using educational technology in their
school. With modern day technology making quick changes to our daily lives, and children and
teens having adapted to having technology in their lives, it is best that schools also take part in
this change to be able to keep up with their students so that they don’t lose their students to
technology. Of course with everything there comes pros and cons, or advantages and
disadvantages. With e-learning comes a number of advantages, e- learning is good for capturing
the interest of the current generation. E-learning is good for being able to make learning easier
for not just the students but also the teachers; it is good for being able to keep students active
in class for it uses something that most are familiar with which is technology. E-learning is good
for making the jobs of teachers easier and the experience of the students more fun. There are
many more advantages of e-learning but for now let the researcher give you some of its
disadvantages, a downside of e-learning is that the students may get even more dependent on
technology than they already are and might get too used to it being in their lives, and the
interaction within student to student may get less and less as the more they use e-learning.
Knowing these disadvantages may make schools not as open to using e-learning, but if you put
the advantages and disadvantages side by side and weigh the advantages to the disadvantages,
one may be able to properly judge this way of learning, and of course having only started not
too long ago there will be little tweaks that the programmers could still fix or change.

Knowing the effectiveness of GENYO e-learning to the students of St. Mary’s Academy of Sta.
Ana Manila is important, for using e-learning today can be called an investment in a way that
the schools administration has yet to find out if GENYO can really help in the learning
development of their students, and once they decide whether or not GENYO is effective on
their students they can choose on continuing the use of GENYO in their school or if they should
stop it. Today, technology leads the way to productivity and the internet has become the
vehicle of choice for markets and educational institution (pendidikan, 2013), which basically
means that in today’s society, technology has been what people use to be productive and that
the internet has been what schools choose as their means of moving forward and advancing.

The following are the groups guide questions or statements of the problem:

1. In what ways can e-learning help students do better in school?

2. Do students prefer e-learning to regular learning? Why?
3. Should more schools invest in using GENYO or other e-learning platforms? Why?
4. In what ways does GENYO e-learning help the teacher?

With these guide questions, the researchers aim to get more schools to be open to e-learning
and get them to implement e-learning in their school for, especially in our technology driven
world, it may be the answer to getting students more into learning. In the Philippines’ especially
in the provinces, the schools choose to stay old school when it comes to teaching and would
rather use books than computers, but when they see that in a school like St. Mary’s Academy,
of Sta. Ana Manila GENYO e-learning has made a good impact on the students grades they
might want to give it a try. You see change is something that not many are that open to for they
are afraid that that change might do them more bad than good, but with the help of this
research other schools would not have to be afraid of trying GENYO, for this research will show
them that using GENYO will do more good than bad. This research aims to convince schools
that with the right mindset and right teachings, GENYO will be able to develop the student’s
academic skills in a way that they are more familiar with. This research also aims to prove that
when the students are learning through the means of technology, something that they are
more familiar and interested in, the students will be able to pick up the lessons quicker
especially if they are learning in an environment that they are familiar with like their own home
for GENYO has the feature of having students be able to access GENYO anytime and anywhere
they have access to a computer and internet.

Hopefully by the end of this research will have many others convinced that when utilized
properly, GENYO e-learning will be able to successfully get the students be more active in class
and get their academic performance in school higher.
