Produced water centrifuge
system for the Alba FSU
The Alba Field
Alba is located in Block 16/26, 130 miles northeast of
Aberdeen. The field lies in a water depth of approxi-
mately 138 m. It was discovered by Chevron in 1984
and came on stream ten years later in January 1994.
The field contains estimated total oil in place reserves of
approximately 1 billion barrels and has recoverable
reserves of about 400 million barrels. This translates into
an approximate production capacity of 100,000 bopd.
By May 1997, the daily average production was 88,516
barrels.

Field Development: Phase 1

The field development was carried out in two phases.
The first involved the installation of a fixed steel plat-
form with integrated production, drilling and living
quarters. This, the Alba Northern Platform (ANP), was
used to develop the northern sector of the field. The
ANP was expected to produce 227 million barrels of oil
from 20 wells. Oil is exported via the Alba Floating
Storage Unit (FSU) – the first of such to be purpose-built
for the UK sector of the North Sea. Crude oil is then
offloaded from the stern of the FSU to shuttle tankers.

Alba FSU
Length 249.5 m, Width 42 m, Draft 23 m, Oil storage
capacity of 872,000 bbl.

Application Scope of supply: Produced water treatment system

Centrifuges from Westfalia Separator Mineraloil supplied as a complete package with
Systems were selected to replace the existing produced 2 x WSC 50 centrifuges, sludge tank,
water treatment system. The decision to install sludge pump, duplex filters, feed
centrifuges was based on their ability to separate pumps, control panel. The centrifuge
the small oil particle size present where other more system is designed for installation in
established technologies had failed. a hazardous area zone 1.
Delivery: 1998
Capacity: 2 x 20 m3/h
Performance: The system is able to reduce the oil
contamination down to less than
40 ppm, with a target performance
of 15 ppm.
