Orange County government has strived over the years to provide an alternative way of
life to its citizens. We have always believed that we should be transparent in what we
do and what choices we make on behalf of all of you. That is why I, your Mayor, want
to talk about the new plan we have for garbage pickup. Instead of just Wednesday, we
want garbage to be collected twice a week - on Monday and Thursday. This decision
was made by analyzing the shopping habits of every person in Town. During our
research, we found out that not only does garbage pile up over seven days it isn't
picked up; but also some people, in a desperate attempt to get rid of their trash, have
been throwing it out in various places.

Silky Pumpkins are having a concert, and I believe we should go. Think about it guys, a
whole weekend of rock in Las Vegas! It's an opportunity that comes once in a lifetime. I
know you like their music as much as I do. After all, they've been releasing a new
album every year, and their songs have been getting better and better. I already
checked the hotel and tickets, and we can afford it as long as we stay in one room.
That's not that big of a problem. We've known each other since we were kids.

Splash Kingdom has been a work in progress for two years. Myself, Josh, and the rest
of the crew have been working very hard to make the game stand out from the rest of
our current projects, and we believe we've done it. Splash Kingdom is a new and
innovative mobile game that centers around player choice. We think it's imperative to
give back the power of choice to our players. The new interactive storytelling system
we developed does exactly that - a chance to change the story. We hired several
writers who developed alternative endings and branching paths to maximize this new
system. Whenever a player makes a choice, an algorithm decides where the next
action will happen on a world map. The possibilities are endless!
Excerpt from Mark Antony's speech in Julius Caesar:

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Caesar, not to
praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their
bones; So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus Hath told you Caesar was
ambitious: If it were so, it was a grievous fault, And grievously hath Caesar answered
it. Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest– For Brutus is an honorable man; So are
they all, all honorable men–

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s I Have a Dream speech is one of the most famous
persuasive speeches of all time. Excerpt:

Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from
the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is
the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of
brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.

Winston Churchill also gave a famous persuasive speech during World War II as
Britain faced invasion from Nazi Germany:

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or
may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we
shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight
on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength
in the air, we shall defend our Island,
whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing
grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we
shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or
a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our
Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the
struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power
and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

HOW TO PLAY A PIANO

It is obvious that one demonstration speech cannot be enough to play the piano.
However, I can teach you how to sit at the piano duly and how to start learning to
play the piano so that you want to continue. Before starting, remember, that as
Chinese proverb puts it, “A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step”.
Also, be advised, that learning means “mistaking”, so watch and repeat after me: no
experience can be gained without practice. We’ll discuss such issues as: 1)
acquaintance with the piano and its main elements an terms; 2) learning the piano
notes; 3) playing the octaves. So, let’s start.

First of all, you will need the piano. Look at it: the most contrasting elements are the
keys, they are black and white. They comprise a keyboard. The keyboard usually has
seven octaves and a minor third. The piano can be closed with the lid which covers
the keyboard when the instrument is not being used. So, we open the lid and press
the key to produce some sound. Move piano bench closer to the piano so that you
can sit conveniently while playing the piano. Look down: there are three or two
pedals under your feet, which are used to change the sound of a note. Raise your
eyes: you see the music rack. It is right in front of you, and it is like a small shelf for
carrying the music paper or sheet music etc. So, you sit, open the sheet music and
put your hands on the keyboard. What should you do next?

The next step is learning the piano notes. Look at the keyboard. There is symmetry
which helps us to differentiate the octaves and learn the location of certain piano
notes. In order to make the process of learning the piano notes easier, we’ll
denominate each white key with the letter. Traditionally, the first seven letter of the
alphabet are used. Thus, starting from the left we assign white keys with the letters
A-G. Black keys can be helpful in finding the corresponding white keys. While this is
not the initial function of the former, we’ll start using them this way. Look at the
keyboard attentively, and you’ll notice that groups of two black keys and three black
keys repeat. So, if you need D, you can find it on the right from the group of two black
keys; F is on the left of group of three black keys etc. Though it requires certain time
to learn where different keys are, this will be helpful for sure. Also, besides white
keys, there are black keys. They are identified according to the white keys which they
border with. Thus, the first black key in the group of three will be denominated as F#
or Gb. In this case, F# means sharp F, i.e. the black note F is half-tone higher than F
which is on the left. Or, it can be identified as Gb (flat G), which means that black
key is half- tone lower than G. You can use the guiding diagram in the beginning but
then you have to learn all the keys without any hint. You should be able to identify the
note simply by looking at the keyboard.

Third, we’ll learn to play octaves or scales. In piano music, octave means the interval
between the two notes which is equal to twelve keys. To play an octave means
pressing smoothly the keys in succession. The simplest octave (C major) means
pressing only white keys, starting from C and ending with the C in seven notes. G
major scale, for instance, includes G, A, B, C, D, E notes, then moving to F#, and
proceeding in the same way. Scales should be learned as well as simplest songs.
They are used to develop the ear for music, practice piano playing and prepare for
more serious piano playing.

To conclude, we have considered the main issues which are needed to be learned by
the beginner. Maybe, Chopin or Mozart still are unavailable for you, because such
serious works require essential time, learning and training. But you can play simple
music pieces. Thus, you will train and learn better the keys and octaves. By the way,
don’t forget to practice octaves regularly: this develops you piano playing skills,
exercises fingers and trains to deal with the piano.
HOW TO INSTALLA CEILING FAN

Today we will learn how to install a ceiling fan. The ceiling fan can become a real
rescue in hot days. Ceiling fan is not so difficult to install if you know the principles of
installation. So, now we will learn to do this. First of all, you should choose the place
where the fan will be located. It is recommended that the ceiling fan is placed in the
center of the ceiling, as far as it allows the flows of air spread all over the room. The
next step is the identification of the blade clearance. So, you should measure the
distance from floor to ceiling and distract the height of the fan. The distance of not
lower than 7′ is recommended. After that, you should mount the ceiling fan.

This is the most responsible part of the installation:

1. you should turn off the power to prevent the electrical strike from happening;
2. then you should identify the center of the ceiling – if there was not light fixture in
the center, you should identify it by yourself. Mark two cross lines on the ceiling from
each of four corners of the room. The place where they cross is the center of the
ceiling.
3. you should install the junction box. In some cases it can be screwed to the joist.
Otherwise, the box should be put into the hole cut particularly for this case;
4. the next step is the installation of the hanger brackets. They have to be installed in
the box with the help of screws and washers;
5. then, wire the unit. Remember that white house wires should be connected to the
white fan wires, while the black house wires should be connected to the black fan
wires.
6. at last, the fan should be electrically grounded to both the fan and the metal box.

Turn it on! If there is some wobbling, be advised that the blades are unbalanced and
this should be corrected. You can change two adjacent blades or check the weight of
each blade. If some is lighter, increase its weight with some small object put to the
center of the blade. Reinstall fan and use it!
TYING A TIE

Hello. My name is Brendon Johnson, and I will show you how to tie a tie. At first sight
it may seem more complicated and time-consuming than nuclear physics, but as soon
as you understand the basics it becomes merely a matter of practice. Believe me, it is
much easier than learning to ride a bike or tying a shoelace.

I will demonstrate how to tie a Windsor knot. It is “a thick, wide and triangular tie knot
that projects confidence”, “your knot of choice for presentations, job interviews,
courtroom appearances”, “best suited for spread collar shirts” (4). In fact, making it is
not tricky at all. Everybody can make a Windsor knot on his tie; however, it is highly
recommended for men with a long neck, for the wide knot will visually diminish the
height of the neck and thus balance the appearance.

What do we need for tying a Windsor knot? Let us start from the essentials. To succeed
in our goal you need three things: a tie, a mirror and motivation. It is highly desirable
that you wear a suit or at least a shirt, for a tie was initially designed to conceal the
buttons on a shirt, so that you will vividly see why a tie is necessary, and how long it
should be. So, ensure that you have all the essentials, stand in front of a mirror, place
the tie on you neck and follow the instructions.

The process itself falls into four simple steps (please refer to the diagram on the
blackboard).

1. Ensure that the wide end is approximately 30 cm lower than the narrow end and
cross the wide end over the narrow one. This will create a loop between the collar and
your will-be tie. Pass the wide end through this loop and then down. So the wide end
will again be on top of the narrow one.

2. Put the wide end under the narrow one; pull it to the left and across the top of the
narrow end. By this time the wide end should encircle the narrow one, forming the first
outline of a knot. The wide end should be located to the right of the knot.

3. Put the wide end beneath the narrow one again, then between the collar and the
knot, and afterwards push it through the loop.
4. Finally, push the wide end through the knot. Next, hold the knot with your left hand,
while adjusting the ends of your tie and pushing the knot to the collar.

Here is the result – a perfectly tied Windsor knot. As we can see by now, tying a tie is
much easier than nuclear physics, and not time-consuming at all. With a tie, a mirror
and proper motivation it took us two minutes to accomplish the task according to the
instructions. If you practice for a couple of times, you will be able to bring the time
required to less than half a minute. From now on you know the secret, and you are
welcome to use it for the benefit of your appearance.
Service cap may be the most important article in the army’s uniform. You
wear a service cap to protect yourself from the rain and hot rays of sunshine.
More importantly, you wear it to signal your military status to others. Military
designers are tempted again and again to make service caps stylish and
fashionable. The US patriot store has a great variety of service caps on
sale – boonie hats, ACU Fleece watch caps, Iraqi Freedom Veteran hats…
They look smart and very tempting to wear.

My old patrol cap, the one I am holding in my hand, is my friend’s present.

It has neither double thick bill nor internal pocket, neither chinstraps nor
breathtaking camouflage color by which any desert sniper would figure me
out in no time. Quite an old thing it is, keeping secrets of the military service
but whenever I put it on … Well, how comfortable it feels – even with that
strong smell of military service! What a feeling!

In the army, the patrol cap is one of the three service cap options, together
with the beret and the military visor dress hat. When I tried to find secrets of
a new ACU patrol cap, it occurred to me that the military value moisture-
wicking boots more than a service cap.

A new patrol cap is described as “an upgraded soft cap with double thick
bill, no earflaps and a lower profile.” (New ACU related questions, nd, np).
Well, my old patrol cap is soft, too. No wonders, it has known so many
laundries. It has no earflaps, either. What about a lower profile or a higher
profile? No sweat, if I change it like this (shows) and like that (shows).
Where’s the rub?

You may ask me why I argue against a new patrol cap.

Because I care for its history and I hate being cheated.

My patrol cap suits me well. It may be used under any weather conditions.
The color may be dulled but a faded cap is the proof of many hours spent
outdoors. I don’t think a special pocket in the crown may alter anything in
this valuable object of mine. Neither would two-ply panels with eyelets
improve it a lot. Well, I can’t call my cap a “flying tiger” but it serves me well.
At least it functions as a cap, has no false pretensions, and protects safely
my head. You would recognize it as a patrol cap at first sight. Such a
cherished model!

Whatever you think, mine is a true patrol cap. In a new patrol cap this feeling
will somewhat disappear. I bet!

New caps are stylish, but how suitable are they to wear?

New caps have certain improvements, but isn’t a wheel always a wheel,
round and rolling along?

Who says that new patrol caps are more comfortable than the old ones?

Isn’t it too costly to introduce changes when they aren’t needed?

The army’s uniform keeps on changing. Patrol caps are still in fashion. They
are stylish and match the design of a new uniform.

However, modifications are not always functionally justified. In my opinion,

an old patrol cap has proved to serve its functions best. So, it is arguable
whether modifications of an old patrol cap are worth the efforts and time.
My patrol cap is history and comfort combined. That’s true!
