For the past 18 months . the Presby-
terian Charismatic Communion has urged
prayer and fasting for the issue coming
before the 190th General Assembly of the
United Presbyterian Church and eventually
facing the General Assembly of the Pres-
byterian Church in the U.S.
PCC has, through its Board and many
of its members, stated its views unequi vo-
cally on the homosexual issue. One year
Task Force to Study Homosexuality holds public hearing in Philadelphia
before the Majority Report for the Task
Force to Study Homosexuality was fi na 1-
i zed, the PCC Board of Directors issued
a statement in which it declared that no
Presbytery of the United Presbyterian
Church, U.S.A., should ordain an avowed
homosex ual to the professional ministry.
The Board relied upon Scriptures, the
Confessions, the law of love as propounded
and practiced by Lord Jesus, and the main-
tenance of the peace, unity and purity
within the Church. This statement, which
was adopted on January 9, 1977, was con-
cluded with these words:

of God, that God's mercy and strength are
more than enough to liberate an .individual
from this or any other sin he or ·she may
have.
In.vesting time, talent, treasures
and personnel, PCC has undertaken to pre-
vent the ordination of self-affirming
and unrepentant homosexuals as ministers,
ruling elders and deacons on the one hand
and to communicate a message of healing
for the homosexual on the other. To this
end PCC has undertaken to subsidize a
$12,000 publishing venture with a booklet

UPCUSA and PCUS minister within the U.S.

A further effort has been exerted by
PCC in cooperation with the Presbyterian

WE CALL upon the United Presbyterian
Church to reaffirm its commitment to
the Scriptures which clearly set forth
God's order in creation, the unique-
ness of male and female, and His plan
for marriage between the sexes.
WE CALL upon the Church to oppose any
position which condones homosexual
activity by the ordination of self-
affirmed and unrepentant homosexuals
and/ or allows for the possibility of
such ordination by the Presbyteries
of the United Presbyterian Church. In
so doing we call attention to the fact
that the Scriptures, the Confessions
of our Church and the 1970 and 1976
General Assemblies have all declared
the practice of homosexuality to be
sinful.
WE CALL all commissioners to the 190th
General Assembly to take definitive
action, based on the authority of the
Scriptures, in opposing the ordina-
tion of self - affirmed practicing
homosexuals.
WE CALL upon the General Assembly to
reject any action which allows for
the possibility of such ordination and
to endorse any action which, on solid
scriptural . and historic grounds, op-
poses the ordination of self-affirmed
homosexuals and unequivocally affirms
that the practice of homosexuality is
a sin.

WE CALL the Sessions of Churches to
take positive action by writing to
the Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of
which they are a member declaring op-
position to the ordination of self-
affirming practicing homosexuals with
supporting reasons, sending copies to '
the Office of the Stated Clerk of the
United Presbyterian Church, 4 7 5 River-
side Drive, New York, NY, 10027, and
to the Evangelical Coalition, 1727 De-
lancey Place, Philadelphia, PA, 19103.
WE CALL congregations and Presbyteries
to minister compassionately and con-
structively to homosexuals and all
persons desirous of healing and whole-
ness, considering carefully the in-
sights from all related disciplines
along with the clear testimony of
Scripture.
WE CALL upon concerned members of the
Church to observe a DAY OF FASTING &
PRAYER on the first Friday of each •
month to pray for the 190th G.A. and
its commissioners; for reformation
and spiritual renewal in the Church.
WE AFFIRM the Reformed position that
no new light received now or in the
future will ever compromise the clear
teaching of Scripture.
WE PLEDGE our allegiance to the au-
thority of Scripture on this and every
controversial issue, and plead for a
fresh outpouring of God's Spirit on
our beloved Church.

resentative with the Evangelical Coali-
tion. He meets on a regular basis with
leaders from both the Lay Committee and
PUBC to pray and to plan. •

Without representing the PCC per se,
any number of PCC clergy and lay members

are working with an even more inclusive
group of Presbyterian churchpersons who
have formed the Chicago Plan which is the
most comprehensive strategy yet implemen-
ted to represent the voice of the majority
of Presbyterians on any single issue.
Orientation Seminar for Chicago Plan
The 300 - pl us laity and clergy who
crowded into a ballroom at the O'Hare
Hilton Hotel in Chicago on Monday, Febru-
ary 13, hailed from more than 100 presby-
teries. There were at le~st three dozen
PCC clergy present with almost half that
many laity.
In the keynote address,
Dr. Ernest Lewis, First
Presbyterian Church of Ev-
anston, Illinois, emphasized
that the Chicago Plan sup-
porters were not in conten-
tion with 475 Riverside
Drive or threatening to
scuttle the Major Mission
Funding. Although the ap-
proach would be biblical,
theological and ecclesias-
tical, the style or attitude Rev. Ernest
could be as important as Lewis
the approach. He warned
that an overki 11 or an over reaction could
produce more damage and division than the
Task Force Majority Report. Dr. Lewis
went on to say that we could well be at a
holy moment in which our love and maturity
are being tested.
He continued by declaring that it is
our love for the homosexuals which cause

us to oppose their ordination, for we
want them restored to what the Lord would
have them to be. He quoted the Episcopal
House of Bishops as having said: 11 We dare
not condone what the Lord wants to redeem."
Since the Chicago Plan espouses the
Minority Report of the Task Force to Study
Homosexuality, three of the five Minority
Members were on hand to provide input.
Dr. Richard Lovelace provided some his-
torical and theological background and
suggested some beneficial results arising
from the homosexual controversy. For one
thing the Church has been re-awakened.
For another, there has been a re-examina-
ti on of basic Reformation tenets which has
illuminated some important doctrines and
attitudes such as repentance, redemption,
the dynamic of Holy Spirit power. It has
actually strengthened Evangelicalism.

Dr. Don Williams masterfully gave a
critique of the 150-page Background Paper
and the 30-page Task Force Policy State-
ment and Recommendations (Majority Report)
in which he pointed ()Uta refusal in these
documents to evaluate the real origin of
homosexuality and to come to grips with
God's true ere a ti ve purpose for human sex-
uality. Dr. Ahmes Overton undertook to
highlight some of the current medical,
psychological, biological, sociological
data, theories and conclusions pertaining
to homosexuality. He observed that there
seems to be many conflicts and much i ncon-
c l us i veness among the scientific disci-
plines. Dr. Overton did note that there
is enough evidence to show that homosex-
uals can change their life style when
properly motivated.

The one-day seminar for the Chicago
Plan was appropriately concluded by
Brother Frank Worthen, a liberated fonner
homosexual, whose testimony bore witness
to those assembled that Jesus. Christ by
the power of the Holy Spirit can alter
the life style of a repentant homosexual.
Following the death of his father, Brother
Frank was led into homosexuality while in
his early teens by his own pastor who him-
self was a homosexual. This was after
Frank had become a Christian.
For more than twenty-five years,
Brother Frank engaged in homosexual be-
havior. In his early forties, he testi-
fies to a renewing and powerful encounter
with Lord Jesus which led to his being
freed of the sin of homosexuality. To
his surprise, the Lord led him into a
ministry to homosexuals. It is called

including PCC, have expressed concern over
the nebulous organization of the Chicago
Plan but will work with it as the Lord

Homosexuality and the Clergy
A Presbyterian task force proposes a policy of toleration
ver 20 centuries. all branches of
0 Christianity barred openly commit-
ted homosexuals from the clergy and from
lay offices. Virtually all major U.S.
churches still do. But the increasingly or-
ganized and vocal campaign by homosex-
uals to be treated just like everyone else
poses particular problems for Christian
churches. Their creed commands broth-
erhood and forgiveness , but it also oblig-
es them to oefend specific standards of
conduct based on the Bible.
This week an official task force desig-
nated to study the problem is proposing
that the 2.6 million-member United Pres-
byterian Church become the first denom-
ination to adopt a policy of toleration. The
gist of its findi.ngs: there is no reason in
principle to deny ordination to a "self-
affirming pra..:ticing homosexual Chris-
tian," even one who is ·'open to" or in-
volved in " full companionship or partner-
ship with a person of the same sex.·· The
new proposal would make it possible for
any local congregation to employ a homo-
sexual if it wished . The church's various
presbyteries (regional associations) must
approve all clergy hiring. and would be
free to accept homosexuals, or reject
them, without any constraint from the na-
tional denomination .
The proposal is certain to produce a
fire storm of argument among the not-so-
United Presbyterians across the country.
The final decision will rest with the
church's annual General Assembly sched-
uled for May 16-24 in San Diego. What
happens there is likely to influence the
separate Southern Presbyterian church
and the four U .S. Protestant churches
(with 16 million members among them)
that have also begun to address the
question.
The task force was chaired by Roch-
ester, N .Y. , Laywoman Virginia David-
son, wife of a retired Kodak executive and
mother of four. The members, selected to
represent various views in the church, in-
cluded an openly homosexual young
alumnus of Yale Divinity School and His-
torical Theologian Richard Lovelace, an
articulate conservative from Gordon-
Conwell Theological Seminary in Massa-
chusetts. With typical Presbyterian thor-
oughness, they prepared a 198-page report
that examines psychological data, social
currents and especially the 13 Bible pas-
sages that deal with homosexuality.
The task force reached an agreement
that secular society should forbid job dis-
crimination against homosexuals and re-
peal laws that regulate the private sexual
behavior of consenting adults. It urges the
church to work against "homophobia,"

 PCC BOARD SEEKS
TO SERVE .
Lantana, Florida - - The PCC Board
of Directors met at the Cenacle Retreat
Center on February 2, 3 and 4 for its
regular semi -annual meeting. Ruling
Elder Chuck Beatty from Houston, presi-
dent, kept the Board moving through a
rather heavy agenda.
. A primary concern of the Board was
to keep the ministry of PCC relevant to
the needs of the Church by maintaining a
clear vision of what the Church should be
about and by emphasizing servanthood
among its PCC members.

mize the efforts and
efficiency of PCC in
its ministry, Doug
Lowry was given the

Brick Bradford was urged to select
some of the conferees at both Montreat in
May and Pittsburgh in June to meet with
several of the Board members after each
conference for input into how PCC may be
of greater service to the Church, partic-
ularly at the grassroots.
After Assistant Treasurer Marjorie
Bradford had submitted the annual finan-
cial report, Treasurer David Wurth pre-
sented the 1978 Budget. It amounted to
$180,000 as compared to the $122,208.68
expended during 1977 on budgeted items.
Pointing out that the Lord continues
to bless PCC in so many ways, French
O'Shields suggested that the Board be
more alert as to how it can help brothers

and sisters in need, whether financial,
physical, mental, emotional or spiritual.
He felt the budget should reflect this
concern.
Bill Showalter reported on the coop-
eration arising among PCC, the Presbyte-
rian Lay Committee and Presbyterians
United for Biblical Concerns as these
three groups are endeavoring to influence
as many Presbyterians as possible to re-
main faithful to God and His Word concern-
ing the sinfulness of homosexuality. They
have fonned the Evangelical Coalition to
seek to accomplish
their mission to min-
ister redemption and
reconciliation to the
homosexual and to the
homophobic by relying
upon the power of the
Holy Spirit and to
proclaim to the Church
the need for re-
pentance, forgiveness
and holiness through
Jesus Christ.
Leona rd LeSourd
informed the Board of
the progress on the
PCC booklet "Healing for the Homosexual 11
and mentioned that the preceding three
days were given by Bill Showalter, Brick
Bradford, Bob Whitaker and himself for
last minute writing and editing of the
manuscript. The hope was expressed that
the booklet would be ready for actual
distribution by March 10.
Jeanne Linquist remains in charge of
any future revision of Dove Songs, the
PCC songbook, and wi 11 seek suggestions
from members concerning changes or im-
provements. One of the Board members,
Earl Morey, was unable to attend because
of heavy snows in the Richmond, Virginia,
area. The other missing Board member,
Tom Kelly, had resigned earlier because
of heavy demands upon his time by his
business and by his local ministry in the

Friday evening Dean Wolf shared some

its phenomenal growth from some 800 mem-
bers to more than 2,700 members within a
five or six year period. Small groups
have played an important part in the life
of the congregation. Love of the Lord
and l eve for one another have been
central.

W. Morey, Jr. and the St.
Giles' Presbyterian Church
in Richmond, Virginia. 11
In its report dated January 18, 1978,
the Commission stated that the "evidence
presented against Dr. Morey did not es-
tablish weakness of character or conduct
or lack of integrity, to justify the dis-
solution of the pastoral relations."
The Administrative Commission ap-
pointed in July, 1977, to hear charges
against Dr. Morey consisted of six minis-
ters and six elders and was ably and
fairly chaired by F. Wellford Hobbie,
Professor of Homiletics at Union Semi-
nary. Rev. Wi1liam Boyce, the chairperson
of the Commission on the Minister and
Dr. Willi am Todd, Pastor of Grace Covenant,
drew up the indictment and prosecuted the
case. Dr. John Newton Thomas, Professor
Emeritus of Theology of Union Seminary,
and Elder William Wirth of St. Giles'
served as counsel for Dr. Morey.
In December, 1977, the hearing con-
sumed thirty-two hours of testimony and
arguments by over fifty witnesses for the
PCC Newsletter

prosecution and the defense. The Commis-
sion spent twelve hours in deliberation
on its decision.
The prosecution brought seventy-five
different charges against Dr. Morey ar-
ranged under three headings as follows:
(a) failure to bean example to the flock;
(b) failure to be prudent and wise; (c)
failure to be in subjection to his broth-
ers and sisters in the Lord. Nineteen
charges were dismissed during the hearing
and forty-five charges were dismissed by
the Commission either "because the evi-
dence submitted did not sustain the
charge", or there was not "sufficient
evidence required to establish a charge."
No charge under the "failure to be an ex-
ample to the flock" was sustained.
Dr. Morey was admonished for failure
to exercise prudence and wisdom in two
different requests for money from an En-
dowment Fund, and for accepting joint
responsibility with the Church Treasurer
for disbursing the Deacon's Fund money
and countersigning all checks. This in-
cluded designating Deacon's Fund money to
benevolent causes, rather than just to
needy individuals.
He was admonished for having been
absent from two key Presbytery meetings

even though he had been excused in both
instances in order to .fulfill teaching
missions at Montreat and in Brazil.
There were several admonitions aris-
ing from his adding another 11 charismatic 11
to the staff; to seemingly giving more
credence to Jamie Buckingham's book Risky
Living than to the Presbytery's paper on

copies of the former to the Elders and
the Deacons who wished to read it but
failing to conduct a serious study of the
latter.

the Third Annual Central Florida Confer-
ence on the Holy Spirit undertook to make
it their best.

The Conference began at 2:00 p.m. on
Friday afternoon and continued through
Saturday afternoon and was held in Trinity
Presbyterian Church in Clearwater. Wor-
ship, workshops and small groups filled
the first afternoon. Friday evening was

dozen members in St. Giles', who had been
opposing him because of his interest in
the charismatic renewal during the past
five or six years. It became apparent
during the course of the hearing that
Earl Morey had the overwhelming support
of the Session, the Diaconate and the
Congregation.
The Administrative Commission also
recommended 11 that all members who have
felt estranged and dissatisfied now seek
to become reconciled with Dr. Morey and
the leadership of St. Giles' Church; that
they refrain from dwelling on past griev-
ances and seek to enter fully into th~
life of the congregation.''

THIRD PCC REGIONAL FOR COLORADO DESCRIBED AS "BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE"
Aurora, Colorado -- Some 300 confer-
ees attended the Third Annual PCC Confer-
ence on the Holy Spirit for the Rocky
Mountain area despite the weather and
road conditions. Even though Jack
Rankin, Conference Coordinator, said the
numbers did not meet his expectations,
the content exceeded his fondest dreams.
He wrote, The conference was a beautiful

experience."
It was held at Faith United Presby-
terian Church in Aurora beginning on
Friday evening and continuing through Sat-
urday evening. The guest speaker was the
Rev. Bob Whitaker, PCC Western Regional
Representative, who gave the keynote ad-
dress "A Call to Holiness" on Friday
night. The Rev. James Dixon, Christian
Education Director for Faith Church shared
as the Saturday morning speaker.
Discovery groups were offered both
Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon.
These included the following: "Minister-
ing to the Lord"--Rex Paulsen; "The Fruit
of the Spirit" -- Bob Beltz; "Lessons in
the Holy Spirit" --Jim May; "Need For A
Committed Relationship" -- Frank Meyer;

Saturday afternoon · was cone l uded
with a meaningful Communion Service in
which the Rev. Dan Hiett, Pastor of First
Presbyterian Church of Littleton, Colo-
rado, brought the message and the Rev.
Mark Moore, Associate Pastor of Faith
Church, administered the Sacrament.
Bob Whitaker gave an unforgettable
message on Saturday evening sharing some
of the progressive healing which has oc-
curred in the life of his eleven-year-old
adopted son Sammy, who had experienced
deep emotional injury in the womb of his
unwed mother. Bob concluded with a strong
appeal for Christians to remain open to
the gifts of the Holy Spirit which the
Spirit would have them share with the
community of believers.
The conference was blessed with the
musical ministry of John and Barbara
Wells of Greeley, Colorado, and of Jim
May, member of Bear Creek Presbyterian
Church in the Denver Area.

DAVIDSON COLLEGE HOSTS CONFERENCE ON
CHURCH RENEWAL
Davidson, N.C. -- This past December
a three-day conference was held on the
campus of Davidson College, a Presbyterian
school, to draw together students who
were in the Presbyterian Church with an
evangelical or charismatic background.
It was sponsored by a student group
called the Davidson Christian Fellowship.
Bob Cathey, Bill Lindner, Rob Shearer and
Bob Morrison, who are all pre-ministerial
students, did much of the preliminary
planning. As the Presbyterian Outlook
and the Presbyterian Journal observed,
most of the adult leadership came from
the Covenant Fellowship of Presbyterians
and the Presbyterian Charismatic Commu-
nion. For example, PCC Board member Dr.
French B. O'Shields, Jr., was one of the
leaders and is the pas tor of Bi 11 Lindner,
a PCC lay member.
The conference theme was "The Lord sI
Church -- Our part in Her Renewal". Bill
Lindner wrote the following to the PCC
headquarters:
"I was truly encouraged by the open-
ness and reliance on what has occurred
through the charismatic renewal: the em-
phasis was more on building on what has
been done and continuing on to maturity
in Christ than anything else. The whole
atmosphere of the conference revolved
around serious commitment to Biblical re-
newal in our lives and our churches and
an equally serious commitment to the PCUS
as the Body of Christ to which we have
been especially called to minister within."
A wide range of subjects were covered
ranging from evangelism to sexuality.
There was a desire to wrestle with the
tough issues facing the Church with the
idea of avoiding some of the errors which
have arisen in the past . Recognizing the
temptation to leave the Presbyterian
Church, the students were challenged
to work from within to renew and to
strengthen.
There are already plans to have a
similar conference next December in hopes
of reaching even more of the students.

PCC REGIONAL CONFERENCE FOR KANSAS
GOES WELL
Lyons, Kansas -- Dick and Mary Ann
O'Hanlon, conference coordinators, re-
ported that the 98 registered conferees
felt that braving the wintry weather was
worth it to attend this year's rec Re-
gional which was held at First Presbyte-
rian Church in Lyons.
Bob Whitaker was well received as he
spoke first on "Called to Holiness" on
Friday evening and as he concentrated on
"Inner Healing" in two Saturday sessions.
Saturday afternoon the Rev. Francis E.
Spear led the workshop on "The Baptism in
the Holy Spirit" and Duwayne R. Hintz had
the workshop on "The Fruit of the Spirit-
-Love11.
Chaplain Lloyd Muilenburg and his
wife Margo provided the worship leadership.

REFLECTIME: THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
LED BY DR. ALBERT CURRY WINN
Louisville, Kentucky -- More than 30
pastors took part in a biblical, theolog-
ical and personal examination of the work
of the Holy Spirit within the Church. A
5-day seminar was held on the campus of
Louisville Presbyterian Theological Semi-
nary to seek to understand more fully the
movement of the Holy Spirit today.
Dr. Winn, former President of and
Professor of Doctrinal Theology at LPTS
and chairperson of the committee which
wrote the new PCUS Declaration of Faith,
has become increasingly interested in the
Person and Work of the Holy Spirit.
One of our PCC clergy members from
the Washington, D. C. area wrote: "One of
the fringe benefits of this course was
the opportunity for.those of us with neo-
pentecostal experiences to talk with oth-
ers whose experience is different. As
the days went by we were able to develop
enough trust to overcome many barriers
and prejudices. I am convinced that we
need more such study events where pastors
can feel 'safe' to come and discuss their
mutual problems and questions."

TOM SMAIL WILL VISIT U.S. IN FALL
The Rev. Thomas A. Smail, who many
considered as one of the best speakers in
Kansas City last summer will be on a
speaking tour of the U.S. and Canada be-
ginning on October 16 and continuing

Northern Ireland from 1953 through 1971.

THE HOMOSEXUAL CRISIS IN THE MAINLINE
CHURCH by Rev. Jerry R. Kirk
Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1978, 191 pages,
$3.95 paperback
Early in his book, Jerry Kirk, sen-
ior pastor of College Hill Presbyterian
Church of Cincinnati, Ohio, accurately
observes that many Christians "are look-
ing for a clear word about homosexuality
as it relates to God's truth. They want
a balanced word, a word that brings to-
gether the whole view of the Scripture;
they want hope as well as judgment, love
and healing as well as a call for repen-
tance. What they are looking for is not
only God's evaluation of homosexuality
(or of homosexual acts as sin), but how the
gospel and the power of God can intervene
with compassion and bring new life to the
homosexual."
The author then undertakes to pro-
vide this clear word. He does so admir-
ably and with an evangelical pastor's
heart which has been softened through the
healing processes of the Lord who removed
an admittedly longstanding deep - seated
homophobia.
Jerry Kirk emphasizes that when it
comes to the bottom line in this whole
homosexual crisis it is God's rights and
not the gay's rights which are at stake--
11especially His authority and man's ac-
countability." Kirk elaborates by saying
that God has the right to ca 11 us to moral
purity and integrity, to deny self and to
become holy as He is holy, to live a life
of obedience to Him, to emulate Jesus
Christ.
The author devotes whole chapters to
the basic resources including the Scrip-
ture, The Confessions, medical and psy-
chol ogical research. He observes in the
latter research there is a conspicuous
absence of the effects that may be wrought
by the motivating, empowering, sanctifying
life of the Holy Spirit to assist the
homosexual to alter his/ her lifestyle
when that person's life is submitted to
the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
A chapter which offers a number of
helpful insights but which possibly could

have been more fully developed is the one
entitled "Love That Lasts--A Reconcili ng
Community." An important note is struck
in suggesting that 11 an extensive, well-
planned small group support system is
necessary throughout the 1oca l church for II
all Christians including homosexuals. The11
church must become a 11 hea ling coITJTiuni ty.
This is a book worth reading and
hence worth buying, for it does offer a
clear word on the homosexual crisis.

at how the Lord has led another PCC mem-
ber into a national ministry, for this is
what has happened to Carol Showalter, wife
of Dr. William P. Showalter, senior pas -
tor of Parkminster Presbyterian Church ,
Rochester, New York .
As Director of Diet, Discipline, Di-
scipleship, Inc., 2710 Chili Avenue ,
Rochester, NY, 14624, Carol shares in an
arresting way how it all began in October ,
1972, when she was about to rejoin Weight
Watchers after gaining back much of the
weight that she had fought so hard to lose .
This Christian counterpart to the
national Weight Watchers Program not only
has led to weight loss but also has help ed
hundreds, perhaps thousands, by now , in
other needed areas of self-discipline in
life . The Lord revealed to Carol and has
confirmed over and over again that Chris-
tians need one another for strength and
encouragement whether in dieting or other
undertakings.
The principles found in this book
have been practiced affectively in a va-
riety of sma 11 · group experiences. The
author discovered, however, it is extreme-
ly important to keep Jesus Christ at the
center and to rely heavily upon His Spirit
as His lifestyle of love is shared with
one another.

Christmas Eve [1977)
brought me back from a 14
week trip to Asia: Singapore,
Philippines, Hong Kong, Tai-
wan, Thailand, Japan and
Hawaii. Though I traveled
alone, I was undergirded by
the strongest prayer support
that I ever experienced. Six
Christian groups laid hands
on me in prayer and sent me
off as part of their mission-
ary outreach with specific
words from the Lord - each
of which came to pass in
detail!
Several dozen individ-
ual friends took over defi-
nite aspects of my journey Leona Choy
as they prayed for my safety, A Temple in Taiwan
my seatmates, food to agree
with me, my contacts with missionaries,
with writers, and various specifics -- in-
deed , the Lord "eh~ed my path" at every
point. One friend got up at 5:00 every
morning as her covenant to pray for me.
Others told of flash prayers at unusual
times on my behalf which the Lord laid on
their hearts. What the Lord actually
brought to pass at those II oantheJ.,t oeean.6 II
will take me many typewriter hours to ex-
press. I just praise the Lord!
My life has been permanently enriched
and changed by many close new friendships
with believers in other lands , "We Me
one ..[n the Sp,,[Ju,;t"
and will continue to
touch each other by words and intercession.
The purpose of my trip was re-expo-
sure to Asia after many years absence, to
focus ' on God's work and workers in the
broad scene of six countries. My eyes and
ears and heart took many
memory photos which time
cannot erase. More speci-
fically, it was a writing-
research trip to follow the
Wind of the Holy Spirit as
He is moving in Asia as well
as in the Western world to
renew His Church in these
last days before the Lord's
coming again. I saw this
at the grass roots level
and through dialogue with
leadership in mainline de-
nominations and their mis-
sionary extensions, Catho-
lic churches and indigenous
ministries throughout Asia .
I interviewed people
recently returned from Main-
land China ... I investigated
the revival in mountain
tribes of Taiwan •.. and did an in - depth
study of a large Japanese indigenous
Christian church ... I participated in a
historic Seminar of Chinese Church leaders
from all Asia with Western missionaries
to discuss cooperation in evangelizing
Chinese worldwide ... and a brief chat with
the most gracious Mrs. Billy Graham in
Singapore . •. I joined a 3-day prayer re-
treat in the mountains with missionaries
from about 8 countries, felt their burden
and heard the words of the Lord through
them.

I visited believers in thatched roof
open huts with earth floors and water
buffalo grazing nearby .... I had precious
midnight conversations about Jesus while
sitting on Japanese tatami mats in shoji
screened homes ... I was thrilled to address
a praising _group of over 1000 Catholic
Christians in a Convent courtyard in the
Philippines .... I was humbled by the many
who requested me to pray for their healing
after I spoke at a Singapore Anglical
Cathedral ... the people phoning for prayer
and counselling in my hotel room ... break-
fast, lunch and dinner appointments with
church leaders, seminary faculty and
Christians in high places -- bishops,
deans, canons, priests, missionaries, ed-
itors, publishers and directors of para-
church ministries.
The Lord had many surprises -- I ex-
pected a low profile writing trip but the
Lord thrust me out to speak in over 40
meetings, conferences. I can't deny that
I was often at the point of exhaustion
physically and mentally but the Lord kept
renewing me -- often when I was groggy
from jet-lag, weak from tummy trouble,
drenched with perspiration in the tropic
weather and totally unprepared in the
natural, I would be called upon to speak.
Without doubt, I give God all the glory!
An unexpected invitation came from
the Billy Graham Ass'n. to teach in their
School of Christian Writing in Bangkok,
Thailand. I alternated lee turing with the
Editor [Roger C. Palms] of Decision maga-
zine -- a tremendous learning experience.
In other countries I was asked to lead
mini-Christian writing seminars with staff
of publications and Christian schools.
I had my first experience to speak
without shoes on in the several Asian
countries where the custom is to leave
them at the door .... I rode strange buses
when I didn't know the language or the

night as you cross the harbor by ferry ...
or the acrid smell of incense in a musty
idol-cluttered Buddhist temple, visiting
Shinto shrines, magnificent centuries old
palaces and gardens ... and wearing out two
pair of shoes--always walking!
I planned to do research for books
and articles I already had underway but
as I listened to thrilling firsthand ac-
counts of the Lord's work in and through
contemporary Asian Christians, which the
Western world ought to know, my briefcase
bulged with new stories and book prospec-
tuses. Three and one-half months is all
too brief--1 don't want to be the kind
of writer who stays in a place for a day
or two and writes a book about it -- but I
believe I have felt the spiritual pulse
of the work of God's Spirit in a place
through His people. Now must come the
prayerful sorting out of data and impres-
sions and the discipline of articulating
"that which I have seen and heard" to de-
clare it orally, as God gives opportunity,

LLOYD WAKEMAN VISITS FAR EAST
A Presbyterian elder and PCC lay
member from Columbia, Missouri, Lloyd
Wakeman, accompanied 23 others on a FGBMFI
air lift to Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and
the Philippines in January of 1978.
Among the highlights for Mr. Wakeman •
were the following: Preaching in the Su
Chieh and the Suao Presbyterian Churches
in Taiwan; an opportunity to share a brief
testimony along with two others to 120 in-
mates incarcerated in a county prison also
in Taiwan--119 responded to an invitation
to receive Jesus Christ into their lives;
addressing a Roman Catholic charismatic
prayer meeting numbering 1200 persons in
Tacloban City, Philippines.

 A PLEA FOR BALANCE IN CHURCH MUSIC

There really needs to be available
help to congregations in the area of musi-
cal balance. Too many groups tend to
throw out some of the great music of the
Church and replace it with choruses and
"gospel" music. We are finding in our
own musical life that the Holy Spirit
teaches us through Handel's Messiah as
well as through choruses like "This is
the Day."
It would be helpful to have resource
people available to work with congrega-
tions and choirs, teaching the balance of
all kinds of music that the Holy Spirit
has inspired -- from Bach to Gaither. Un-
fortunately, many groups tend to throw
Bach out with the bathwater when renewal
begins. L had the very sad news that one
of my colleagues quit his job because his
Lutheran congregatibn was undergoing re-
newal, and the pastor wanted nothing but
gospel music. ·
Last May I spent some time at the
Church of the Red.eemer (Episcopal),

Mims, is, like myself, a graduate of
Union Seminary, New York. We spent quite
a bit of time lamenting the fact that the
spiritual aspect of church music was so
lacking in our profession. We both felt
a deep need to be in contact with our

Spirit and were into the spiritual side
of church music. ·
I don't pretend to have the answers
for all of this, but I am willing to offer
my services in any way that would be
helpful. I do offer my office as a source
of contact for charismatic musicians.
Perhaps a notice in the PCC Newsletter
would get us some names and addresses
with which to begin.
Also, perhaps there could be a "shar-
ing" column in the Newsletter each issue
where new ideas about music in the charis-
mati.c church could be passed on.

[On February 28, 1978, FCC Newsletter Editor Brick Bradford replied to Mabel Darby's
letter as follows:]

"In reply to your letter dated February 3 concerning PCC's plans should either the
General Assembly endorse or leave .it to the presbyteries concerning the decision on or-
daining self-affirming, pra~t~ci~g ~9mosexuals, we have formalized none.
"Our reason is that we are determined to defeat this action and believe that it
can be defeated. We are praying and fasting and working diligently to influence as
many as possible to uphold the biblical position on the sin of homosexuality but to min-
ister to the homosexual. This is why we are sending our PCC booklet to every ordained
Presbyterian minister in the United States. It is entitled "Healing for the Homosexual."
We shali be sending this to all of you PCC members within the next ten days.
