AN EXTRA PUNCH TO SHOW 'EM WHO's BOSS JUST BECAUSE IT FEELS GOODIE nt TT —— fil e DC Comics 1700 BROADWAY NEW YORK, NY 10019 ADVENTURES IN THE DCU #9 Dear Steve, John, and Frank, fm writing to compliment you on the Flash story in ADVENTURES IN THE DC UNIVERSE #9. Being that | care not for Morrison's work, this was my only sighting of Flash for a few months, and my last at least until JLA YEAR ONE. I'm hardly Mr Silver Age when it comes to trivia, but ! think | do remember seeing a reprint of the classic story to which this is a tribute—or at least its cover. Like the last Flash story, this ‘one was also reminiscent of Waid's early and best work, and | mean that as a great ‘compliment. And the action figure scene was so fine The Black Canary story reminded me yet again that for all the “hot, breasts bigger than their head, gun-carrying girl babes” that I'm told “sell so well,” | find the ADVENTURES renditions of women far more lovable and worth their weight in salt. IF were in a position to buy original art, I'd be after the splash—no pun intended— page of this story. Every story I've read in ADVENTURES has given me exactly what | expected and wanted: a wild, imaginative story in the animated style. BEN VARKENTINE SEATTLE, WA yw Dear Frank and KC, ‘What an interesting way to invoke both the Silver and Modern Age Flashes—bring back the Big Head Flash! | remember the ofiginal story from a reprint book put out in the 1970's. What a gas! This was a far cry better than the first Flash story in issue #2, both in story content and pacing. Steve's ‘writing is improving with each issue as he moves away from the obvious “younger reader” streamlined stories that dominated the first six issues or so. I'm not suggesting the title go over to Vertigo or anything drastic; | only want stories with a tad more depth to them. | also missed the segue between stories this issue. Some might argue that it becomes clichéd to link the two stories every issue, but | disagree. There is a charm to the main story providing a link or the background to the backup. All in all, an enjoyable issue, folks. See you in thirty ROBERT E. GROVER AMHERST, MA yori. fo, KC and Frank! ‘ADVENTURES IN THE DC UNIVERSE is something | look forward to every month for two reasons: 1) I get two complete stories every issue, and 2) | get to see characters | normally don't read. That said, issue #9 embodied the best of what | buy this title for. The Flash is a character | don’t usually collect, but he's a great character and it's nice to be able to read him without being stuck in the middle of an arc. At the same time, Ciphor is turning out to be a nice arc character, and ''m enjoying that little aspect of the story Black Canary is a complete mystery to me. Ive never read any books with her, but | might just have to start seeking some out She seems to be a bit like Batman in abilities, but it’s always nice to see a woman that confident. Sometimes | worry about the lack of strong female characters in the DCU, but you've already shown off a few of them in this ttle. The stories themselves had some nice touches. | always like seeing appearances of the Trickster; I think he's my favorite villain (strange, since I'm not a Flash fan). The flunkies chatting with each other was a nice touch. | always figured those guys were just too dumb to even talk. You'd think they would know the dangers of their job if they had any brains. Black Canary's story had a couple of problems for me. This Mental Morrie guy seemed to have a story that ought to be told, but we never got that side of him. The art on that character was also disturbing. it’s OK to have some distortion—these are comics, after all—but he was just TOO skinny. Keep up the good stories, and give me a Dolphin backup story! See you in thirty! LAURA GJOVAAG REDMOND, WA You can see more of Black Canary in the pages of the upcoming series BIRDS OF PREY, available later this year at finer comic shops everywhere. And next time we'll try to give you the “skinny” on Mental Morrie. Yow y Dear DCU: ‘ADVENTURES IN THE DCU #9 featuring The Flash was a holler! | knew The Flash was a big brain, but this issue showed us exactly how big a cranium he has! Of all the headshot covers (which were very cool, as @ whole), this was by far the most hilarious. | remember a Silver Age tale featuring a similar story, but I'm sure it wasn't as good as this one, Steve Vance has a knack for writing humorous tales with a nod toward the classics, and this was no different. From Grodd and his devolution ray to the appearance of the Trickster, this was classic Flash! It was also a nice touch to have Wally review the case files of his mentor, Bary Allen. | never thought that those heroes actually took notes about their adventures! His lab work was also reminiscent of Barry's career. People tend to forget that Barry was a police scientist. Even I did until | read the FLASH SECRET FILES. John Delaney is coming along nicely as a penciller. He really gave Linda Park a good look this issue, as well as making Wally look really go especially when he was getting clobbered by Grodd on page 12. And speaking of villains, again we see the mysterious (and nefarious) Cipher. He keeps coming back like a bad habit. I'm really curious about his identity, but more so about his motives. What's his problem with our heroes? He doesn't seem to like anybody! I'm looking forward to learning more about him, so feature him again very soon, ‘Another great issue, guys; keep itup! DAVIE G. WALBRIEG ANN ARBOR, Mi you y Dear Adventurers: I just picked up the latest issue of ADVENTURES IN THE DC UNIVERSE which featured a Flash story and a Black Canary backup, and needed to write in. This series has been continuously growing on me. 1 remember Steve Vance's work from the Simpsons comics, which | enjoyed, but doubted his ability to write super- hero tales. Well, slap me silly for my doubts! Not only does he seem to have @ grasp of the characters, but it i obvious that he also doesn't hesitate to add his own special brand of humor ito each issue. From the guy singing Margaritaville” in the Aquaman issue ‘0 Cipher crushing the Flash action figures in a fit of rage to “Mental Morrie” and Ed “The Hammer” Hamilton (did somebody say Hammer Time? Ouch. That hurts)..it's great stuff The market seems so full of boring titles with bad art and no story that your book practically leaps off the stands at me each month! The ADVENTURES titles are unique, but also very powerful. Straightforward storytelling and great artwork throughout. Nice coloring, also. JONATHAN MCHENRY TULSA, OK ’ Dear DCU: {As a big Flash fan, | loved issue #9 of ADVENTURES IN THE DCU. He's popped up several times in this series, but you'll never hear me complaining, only The Flash could have his own ADVENTURES title, then | could die happy. Now on to my Wish List: Of course | would love to see a Flash/ Impulse tearn-up in these pages. | think Impulse would be perfect for this type ‘of book. In fact, add Max Mercury to the tale and it would be even better! Let's see some more stories featuring Wonder Woman and Green Lantern: That issue was by far my favorite this if year! Also, | would love to see some Classic tales of Aquaman with Hal Jordan as GL (before his Parallax days) and Supergirl. The Blue Beetle and Booster Gold issue was also fun, but they deserve a full issue all their own. | could continue, but | won't. Just keep con doing what you're doing By the way, | can't wait for the next ish featuring my favorite team of al times: The Legion of Super-Heroes! Now if only the Outsiders were not far behind JESUS REYES ANAHEIM, CA This must be your lucky day, Jesus? The Flash took on Superboy in this very issue! Also, Impulse made his presence felt in issue #13 with the Martian Manhunter!
