Technology Project - Class 1

TITLE: Splice Beat Maker Experience Design

I. OVERVIEW: ​Learners will be introduced to Splice Beat Maker, and create their own
drum beat.
II. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
A. Standards:
1. VA SOL MIB.20.2 The student will analyze and evaluate music by
describing and interpreting works of music, using inquiry skills and music
terminology
2. VA SOL 8.6.3 The student will create music through a variety of sound
and notational sources by using contemporary media and technology to
create music.
B. I Can Statements:
1. I can communicate what emotion a featured beat made me feel.
2. I can describe musical elements of featured beats.
3. I can create an original beat.
III. ASSESSING LEARNING: ​Learners will be assessed complete/incomplete based on
whether or not they fill in the below chart, as well as submit an original beat.

IV. MATERIALS:
● Computer with internet (1 per learner)
● Headphones (1 per learner)
● Splice Video Project packet - the handout with images and the grid handout (1 per
learner)
V. PROCEDURES:
A. Greet learners. (T) Direct learners to logon to their computers and grab
headphones. (S) Logon
B. (T) Overview project: “Before I set you all lose, let me give some general
instructions. The handout with images is yours to keep. It lists the steps of this
project, and how to complete everything. The grid handout is for step 3 ‘Listen to
Featured Beats’ and is something you will turn in at the end of class. Basically
you are going to listen to tracks of music, fill in the tempo, how many instruments
the track is playing, indicate how the beat makes you feel - in English, emoji, or
other, and describe musical elements - use your musical vocabulary to support
what you are feeling or hearing. Alright, ready set go :)”
C. (T) Assist learners with creating an account on Splice. (S) Learners create an
account.
D. (T) Answer learner questions pertaining to the grid handout.
E. (T) Assist learners in creating their original beat.
F. Closure - Thank you!
G. Extensions - Learners can go to the music room and grab the music they plan on
playing, and begin composing their beat for step 6.
VI. ADAPTATIONS
● All learners will receive a step-by-step of the project with images to reinforce the
words with visuals.
● Learns can self-select how they want to express their feelings (e.g. English, emoji,
drawing, other)

TITLE: Splice Beat Maker Experience Design

I. OVERVIEW: ​Learners will create a Splice beat, and record themselves playing overtop
of it.
II. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
A. Standards:
3. VA SOL 8.6.3 The student will create music through a variety of sound
and notational sources by using contemporary media and technology to
create music.
4. VA SOL MIAD.16.3 The student will demonstrate musicianship and
personal engagement by monitoring individual practice with a level of
refinement that reflects advanced musical goals

1. I can create an original beat.
2. I can rehearse playing overtop of my original beat.
III. ASSESSING LEARNING: ​Learners will be assessed based on the following rubric:

Projects. Beck and Sara I will talk to you both separately to catch you up. If your
name is on the powerpoint you need to submit a beat to Seesaw. Everyone else,
continue working on your second beat. You can record today and be done, so
begin practicing playing with Splice as soon as you are ready.”

D. (T) Assist learners in creating their original beat, and in rehearsing their piece.
