High Voltage Transmission System
Time Allotted: 3 Hours Full Marks: 70
The figure in the margin indicated full marks.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable
Group-A
1) For a 400 KV transmission line, the resistance per km is 0.031 ohm/km and the
reactance per km is 0.327 ohm/km. For a voltage angle δ = 30° between the buses,
determine the power transmission capacity of the line at t=20°C.
3) The configurations of some E.H.V. lines for 400 kV and 1200 kV are given as .
400 kV : N = 2, d = 2r = 3.18 cm, B = 45 cm
1200 kV : N = 8, d = 4.6 cm, R = 0.6 m
Calculate req for each
5) Indicate two items/devices by using which corona effect can be reduced and why.
Group-B
1) (a) Derive the expression for Inductance of single phase two wire line per meter.
(b) Calculate the loop inductance per km of a single phase transmission line comprising of two parallel
conductors one meter apart and 1.25 cm in dia. Also calculate the reactance of the transmission
line. Frequency is 50 Hz.
(c) Why transposition in 3 phase line is done?

3) Derive the expression for Inductance of single phase two wire line per meter.
Calculate the loop inductance per km of a single phase transmission line comprising of two
parallel conductors one meter apart and 1.25 cm in dia. Also calculate the reactance of the
transmission line. Frequency is 50 Hz.

4) A 400-kV line in India uses a 2-conductor bundle with dm = 0.0318 m for each conductor.
The phase current is 1000 Amps (500 Amps per conductor). The area of each conductor is
515.7 mm2, ra = 2.7 × 10–8 ohm-m at 20°C, a = 0.0045 ohm/°C at 20°. Take the ambient
temperature ta = 40°C, atmospheric pressure p = 1, wind velocity vm = 1 m/s, e = 0.5 and
neglect solar irradiation. Calculate the final temperature of conductor due only to I 2 R
heating.
