Questions Review

1. How the Harmonic distortion due to addition of capacitors will be checked and incorporated in
the specification
We recommend to get all the parameters from the selected vendors and re-run the study
considering the plant harmonics data to verify the harmonic distortion level.
2. Type of Capacitor and Design guidelines – What is our experience and how do we qualify the
suppliers ?
We have listed out the specs and guidelines which are provided to all vendors and calling
them to evaluate technical details based on the Scope of Work / Specs / Standard Guidelines.
3. Did we check for resonance effect in various scenarios?
We have checked the resonance effect and we will evaluate the same once the vendor is
selected and parameters are provided before giving the go-ahead for the design /
manufacturing clearance.
4. Are we considering detuned filters? If yes how do we arrive the values and share the detailed
calculations.
We have shared the current harmonic level at 220kV & 11kV and have asked vendor to
purpose the detuned filter rating along with the calculations.
5. Are we considering Vacuum contactors for switching MV capacitors breaker is no designed for
many number of operations can be used for fixed capacitors.
We are purposing VCB for the fixed capacitor bank and Vacuum contactors for the variable
steps of capacitor bank due to no. of operation with variable steps and vacuum contactor is
more suitable for more no. of operations in comparison with VCB
6. Protection system need to include the following
a. 50 instantaneous Overcurrent/Short Ckt
b. 51 times/Delayed overcurrent
c. 50 N/51N – Instantaneous and timed ground current with unbalance protection
d. 27 Min voltage relay
e. 59 Maximum voltage relay
f. Step protection with each step
Expect for the Undervoltage protection (ANSI 27) we have considered all above protections
and same has been informed to all the vendors.
7. Normal Operating voltage levels
Capacitor Bank voltage rating is considered as 12.87kV with 6% detuned reactor and 13.05kV
for 7% de-tuned reactor.
8. KA short ckt withstand levels
We have informed vendors to consider 26.3kA or 500MVA as system fault level
9. Temperature class
a. 55 °C maximum permissible peak temperature
b. 45 °C maximum permissible average temperature during 24 hours
c. 30-35 °C maximum permissible average temperature during one year
10. I would request Techlabs to review the proposal to calculate the fixed capacitors for E boost
compensation with interlocks to E boost estop system. This will save some good money in terms
of Switching capacitors at 11 KV system
We have already discussed and same has been informed to TECHLABS and we have worked
out the same as to be 1000kVAR to be fixed compensation which will take care for the E-Boost
reactive power requirement and same will be switched-off in case of E-Boost outage
11. Consider Upgrading the 11 KV existing fixed capacitor on main 11 KV bus combined for both the
plants. How more we can go here fixed to compensate the current situation?
Due to varying nature of load i.e maximum demand of 18.8MVA and minimum demand of
12.5MVA we can work out to check how much more can be added for the fixed capacitor
bank.
