Foreword
Congratulations and welcome to the M.Sc. Neuroscience programme in Trinity College Dublin.
This Handbook contains information regarding the course and also provides you with
information about the facilities available to you.
Throughout the course you will gain a broad based appreciation of neuroscience, and will also
receive in depth instruction in certain specialised areas of neuroscience from both a
theoretical and practical standpoint. In addition to neuroscience specific knowledge and skills,
this M.Sc. programme will allow you to become proficient in a range of transferable skills such
as data handling & statistics, computing, library and laboratory resource skills, and written/oral
communication skills. A major part of the year is an individual research project that counts for
30% of your degree marks.
Due to the multidisciplinary nature of Neuroscience, this M.Sc. course will be demanding and
will require you to be committed to your studies. Students are expected to work hard and
take complete responsibility for their own learning. However, you should always feel free to
seek advice and guidance from members of teaching staff.
The multidiscliplinary M.Sc. in Neuroscience attracts students with a variety of academic,
cultural and international backgrounds. Considering the diverse academic backgrounds of
your M.Sc. class, in addition to learning within the context of formal lecture and workshop
sessions, we encourage co-operation with your fellow students to learn from each other along
the way and enhance your overall experience.
Should you have any queries about any aspect of your training, then do not hesitate to contact
me or your research supervisor. To help orientate you to the regulations and guidelines that
apply to postgraduate students at Trinity, you should consult the website at:
http://www.tcd.ie/Graduate_Studies/, OR, Part #2 of the University Calendar.
Please note an Introductory Session will take place on Mon 02 Sep 2019 at 10am in the Teaching
Laboratory (2nd Floor), Trinity Biosciences Institute (TBSI), just before we start the first
laboratory. We will meet you at the lobby of TBSI at 9.30am Mon 02 Sep 2019.
Wishing you every success and hope that you enjoy your time in TCIN over the next year.

psychiatric and neurological disorders

• Demonstrate knowledge of key experimental methodologies used to answer research

questions in the neurosciences

• Synthesise and critically evaluate published information and present it in written or oral
format to both specialist and non-specialist audiences

• Demonstrate a detailed knowledge and critical understanding of selected areas of

neuroscience gained through independent research

• Recognise the value of scientific enquiry and demonstrate an understanding of the ethical
responsibility of scientists

• Pursue, under supervision, an original neuroscience research project

• Show proficiency in searching literature databases and analysis and presentation of data

• Instigate, maintain and appraise their own self directed learning

• Apply an empirical approach to problem solving

Core and Elective Modules

What to consider when choosing your modules

How many taught modules do I need for the course?

You need to take and pass a total of 12 x 5 ECTS taught modules (total of 60 ECTS) to satisfy
the course requirements.

What are distance learning (DL) modules?

The distance learning modules are designed for those who are able to work independently
through a module. These modules require little to no attendance on college campus. The
DL modules, for example, include: Cellular Neuroscience (CEL), Journal Club (JRC),
Literature Review (REV).

What should I choose if I want to spend more time on my research project?

To spend a little more time on your research project you may consider taking an extra
model in the Michaelmas term (i.e. take 9 modules) and then take 3 modules in the Hilary
term. Please note however this would require a great deal of hard work and may
compromise on your performance and exam results. You should also discuss with potential
project supervisors if their project may be available to start before the official project start
date.

Can I change my mind?

You will not be able to change modules once your Module Choice Form has been received.

Who can I ask?

Prof. Dev will be running Q&A sessions in the first week. Please contact him (devk@tcd.ie)
if you wish to speak about your module choices.
