 Know the audience

Why we must knowing the audience before presentation because understanding the audience is
a basic thing that needs attention. By knowing the audience makes it easier for us to communicate
in the presentation. The more complete data we get about the audience it will be better for us to
deliver the presentation.
By knowing the audience long before the presentation starts, it will be easier for us to arrange the
presentation material needed. Know and choose the right delivery method. By understanding our
audience, we can adjust our language that suits their situation, so that the audience will be able
to understand. For example are they professionals or nonprofessionals? Purchasers or sellers?
Providers or users? Internal or external?. Here are some important things we should know about
the audience before deliver presentation :

a. Age Range
The array of issues that worry a group of seniors is going to be different than a group of high
school students. Make sure that the topic of our speech is relevant to the life stage most
represented by the audience.
b. Gender
Depending on the organization or special occasion, the audience may be made up primarily
of one gender. Choose language that is suitable and appropriate for audience without being
patronizing. Pay attention to the pronouns we use, the anecdotes we tell and the issues we
focus on. And no matter what, always avoid sexist, derogatory jokes that perpetuate harmful
stereotypes.
c. Educational background
word choice, level of formality, use of humor, and presentation style including the use of
visuals and handouts should be shaped by the audience’s educational background. If we're
worried that we might sound like we are talking down to the audience, aim for a speech level
(vocabulary, syntax, pace) that is just a notch higher than that of the audience. By doing so,
we’ll neither bore the audience with overly simplistic phrases nor talk over their heads with
complex technical jargon.
d. Jobs and Careers
If the audience is made up of people sharing a specific occupation, tailor our presentation to
include stories and anecdotes that are relevant to people's career concerns.
e. Social and/or economic status
An audience full of people who represent the working middle class is going to have a different
set of interests and needs from wealthier, more affluent audiences. If we are trying to get the
participants to buy a product or service from us, we'll want to make sure that what we are
offering is affordable and well priced
