CLOSING REFLECTION

Now that you have heard the full story, record a reflection that might include
● Factors that impacted Collins’ journey
● Areas in which school personnel could have intervened
● Actions you can take as a teacher for students/families in similar situations
● Thoughts on the relationship between home and school

I know that not all of Collin’s teachers were supportive and caring, but if more of them were, he would have
had his needs better met. For example, they would have given him necessary accommodations, and more
importantly, they would have loved and empathized with him better. He would have learned social skills and
as a result, had friends and better self-esteem.
The school should have had him on a 504 or an IEP; if they already did, it probably was not as effective as it
should have been. The school would have had to ensure that they were doing what was best, to help Collin
be successful in school.
As a teacher, I really do my best to get to know all of my kids and their families. If I had a student in the same
position as Collin, I would try and understand why the child was doing certain things. I would have
conversations with both the child and family. I would want to figure out a plan of action, to help the child, and
have the child and family involved in the same plan.
I feel like the relationship between home and school could have been better. The school should have aligned
a plan with Collin and his mother, so that they were all on the same page. If the school had been more
understanding to Collin’s disabilities, then he would have had proper assistance and possibly a brighter
future.
