5 Assignment
1)You are driving in heavy traffic and it begins to rain. Explain a defensive driving technique
that you could use to help make you and your passenger safer.
If you are driving in heavy traffic and it begins to rain, a defensive driving technique you could use to
create safety could be to create space, use appropriate signals and lights depending on weather,
and make sure to go proper speeds. For example, if it is raining the ground is obviously going to be
very wet and this reduces traction to your tires. This could reduce control, so it is important to keep
space in case you loose control, or hydroplane because this can reduce the chance of an accident.
With rain there can be fog or if the rain is heavy enough it can reduce your visual perception of the
area. So, it may be necessary to turn on your taillights even if during the day so that other drivers
can see you, which will help you avoid getting rear ended. If you are on a road of higher speeds, it
may be safe to slow down a little bit under the speed limit to increase control over the traction
reduced by the rain.
2) Explain three common risk factors for young drivers and how you plan to minimize these factors.

- One common risk factor for teen drivers is distractions. Many teens are very involved in social
media and other activities on their phone. This can cause the driver to not realize what is going on in
real time. This can cause accidents and many other emergencies. A good way to prevent this is to
put your phone in the glovebox, turn it off, etc.

- A second risk factor is impairments, mainly drugs and alcohol. Driving under the influence is a very
large problem because it causes many accidents due to lack of control. A good way to prevent this is
if you are sober, make sure you drive your friends if they are under the influence. Or if you are all
under the influence, make arrangements for an uber, taxi, or some form of safe transportation.
- A third risk is teen passengers. Teenagers are very often making bad decisions. They can act as a
very big distraction as well acting as an influence to do illegal things such as speeding. A good way
to minimize this is to be in control of who you are driving, do not drive people who will influence you
in a bad way, and in all cases make sure that your passengers know to respect you in the means
that you need to focus on your driving.
3) The three parts of the Highway Transportation System (people, vehicles and roadways) present
many risks. Choose one part of the Highway Transportation System, describe the risk it poses, and
how you can avoid that danger while driving.

People: People can cause a big risk because they can always think they are in communication when you
are distracted. This can cause you to catch them at the last moment which can make you swerve and
cause an accident. A way to prevent this is to make sure you are always scanning your surroundings so
you will not be surprised by the sight of a person.

Vehicles: Vehicles are unpredictable as far as abrupt stops and lane switches. They can also pose a
danger since many drivers are distracted or impaired. You can avoid this by practicing defensive driving
habits and making sure to drive safe.

Roadways: A risk roadways pose is weather hazards. This can cause lack of control of your vehicle and
poses danger if proper procedures are not followed. However, these dangers can be prevented by
following proper procedures such as turning on your lights in heavy rain or fog and making sure to take
turns slowly to avoid loss of control.

4) While driving you encounter an emergency/service vehicle stopped ahead. Discuss how the Move
Over Law applies to this situation and your responsibilities as a driver.
2.5 Assignment
If you are driving and you see an emergency vehicle stopped ahead. According to the Move Over
Law, you should move over a lane in order to give them a space to pass so their trip can flow
smoothly. You will preferably be able to pull the car over or if not slow to a speed 20 mph under the
speed limit or 5 mph if the speed limit is posted under 20 mph. This also applies to making sure to
be cleared of distractions or anything that can impair your focus because you may not notice an
emergency vehicle which will end up with you breaking the law even if you don’t mean to.
