Nonlinear Time Domain Simulation of the Motions of Floating Bodies in Waves

A time domain simulation method for the prediction of the motions and T draught
loads of arbitrarily shaped floating bodies in waves is presented. The t time

The above equation results from a strict second-order perturbation

In next Figure 6 the horizontal drift force for the cylinder is presented.
The zero frequency force component resulting in the spectral analysis

Comparing the CAPSIM results to the other numerical methods it


seems that simulated force converges to the other numerical results for
higher frequencies beyond the heave resonance frequency at about
kR=0.65. Regarding the lower frequencies, a continuous overestimation
of the drift force predicted by the simulation method throughout the
frequencies up to the resonance is observed. However, compared to the
other numerical methods, the simulation results come closer to the
experimental ones for a significant range of frequencies whereas they
tend to diverge at the resonance frequency itself.

The general behavior of the drift forces over the entire frequency range,

Figure 7 the mean drift velocity of a model of a passenger/RoRo ferry
(L = 5.333m, B = 1.014m) that has been recently tested in a model tank
[Spanos, Maron and Papanikolaou (2002)], in regular beam waves and
zero speed, is properly predicted by the simulation method for higher
values of kB, where B is the model’s breadth. For the lower values of
kB the measurements and numerical predictions by the simulation
method diverge, likewise the observed behavior for the horizontal drift
force on the cylinder in Figure 6. For the model test shown in Figure 7,
the horizontal drift force seems to be underestimated compared to the
experimental values, as indicated by the higher drift speed resulting
from the numerical simulations.

The heave motion presented in Figure 4 is practically identically


estimated by all methods for all frequencies out of the heave resonance
bandwidth. As regards the resonance region, the simulation method
calculates somehow lower motions because of the inclusion of minor
viscous roll effects. The predicted first order pitch motion in Figure 5 is
practically identical for all the methods through out the frequency
range.

surge direction like the cylinder studied in the previous paragraph, and
is free to drag downstream under the action of the drift force and the
induced resistance because of the body’s steady downstream speed.

The cylinder coupled motion in surge, heave and pitch in regular waves
of constant steepness (H/λ)=1/100 has been calculated with the
simulation code CASPIM. The steady state response of the cylinder has
been analyzed in the frequency domain and the two components
corresponding to the wave frequency (ω) and that of the double
frequency (2ω) are depicted in Figures 10, 11 and 12, together with the
corresponding numerical results of the other methods. The NEWDRIFT
numerical results correspond to the second order theory calculations by
Zaraphonitis, and the MOLIN results to the relevant second order
calculations by Molin. In these diagrams the thick lines correspond to
the (ω) components whereas the thin lines to the (2ω) components.

As presented in the above diagram the cylinder’s surge motion consists


of a transient phase that gradually goes over to a harmonic oscillation
around a mean value of 0.03 m. This mean displacement is the net
effect of the exerted drift force and the assumed soft spring restoring
force in the surge direction.

In the next Figure 9 the spectral analysis of the above surge motion
results to a zero frequency component that corresponds to the mean
surge displacement and the motion corresponding to the wave
frequency of 3.13 rad/sec. Note that the motion spectrum has been
herein analyzed for the motion 150 sec after initialization of the
simulation and a small amount of transient motion energy is still
present at about 0.15 rad/sec.

Double Frequency Responses

As observed in Figure 10, where the surge motion of the cylinder is


depicted, the simulated motion response at (ω) frequency, that
corresponds to the first order motion, converges to the other numerical
results for higher frequencies to the right of frequency kR=0.20, which
correspond to the pitch resonance. For the lower frequencies the
simulated surge motion diverges from the rest numerical results.
Regarding the second order motion (2ω) results a quite well correlation
between the simulation results and those of Molin is observed.

Regarding the heave motion of the cylinder, presented in Figure 11, a


fine correlation between the three methods is observed, whereas the
double frequency response shows a low correlation of the obtained
results, particularly around the heave resonance frequency, where a
substantial underestimation occurs for the simulation method results.
For the lower frequencies up to kR=0.25 a coincidence of results of the

In the next two Figures 13 and 14 the asymptotic responses for surge

In this paper a quasi-nonlinear time domain simulation method for the


prediction of the motion of floating bodies was presented and validated
by studying the behavior of two vertical cylinders in regular waves. It
was shown that the present time domain solution has been successfully
implemented and disposes all fundamental characteristics to enable its
further development towards a fully satisfactory nonlinear time domain
solution method.

The present method benefits from the known advantages of non-linear


time domain solutions. It allows the simulation of large amplitude
motions for non-harmonic excitations. A variety of external force
effects, like mooring, current and wind loads, trapped water movements
etc can be easily studied. Finally, the efficient numerical
implementation of the method in the developed code allows practically
real time simulations of complicated body motion on a modern desktop
computer.

The method was herein validated by calculations of second order forces


and motions compared to strict second-order frequency domain theory
formulations and the overall agreement was satisfactory. The present
simulation method deviates from the strict second-order frequency
domain theory formulations at lower frequencies where the wave
amplitude assumed in the simulation method is absolutely large, as well
at the range of heave resonance, where absolute heave motions are also
significantly large.

Further research is considered necessary to definitely conclude on the


validity of the method for the prediction of motions and loads of intact
of damaged floating structures in waves, though the method proved
until now fully satisfactory for the prediction of damaged ship motions
in waves.
