Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM

This chapter begins with a brief background to the study habits that

affects the HUMSS students of Urdaneta City National High School. The chapter

consists of the Background of the Study, Statement of the Problem,

Assumptions, Significance of the Study and Definition of Terms.

Background of the Study

Study habits of students changed over the past generations. In the past

generations, students tend to read more books in order to be academically

excellent. (Rabia, Mawish, 2017) R

2

ecommended that everyday reading activities in which students engage influence

their studying skills and subsequent academic performance. There is a general

sense in which one appreciates the link between good habits of reading and the

academic performance of students generally. (Rabia, Mahwish, 2017) Reading is

the ability to understand words contained in a document and make use of the

knowledge for personal growth and development. This implies making meaning

out of recorded information either printed or non-printed in the life of an

individual. People read for different reasons and purposes, some of which

includes for pleasure, leisure, relaxation, information and for knowledge.

Learning tendencies that enable students to work privately are their study

habits. (Llavore, Darwin C., 2015) stated that study habits play a vital role to

students of any age such study habits will determine student’s success in their

educational career and cited Fielden (2004) stating good study habits help the

student in critical reflection in skills outcomes such as selecting, analyzing,

critiquing, and synthesizing also cited Nneji (2002) opinion that study habits are

learning tendencies that enable students work independently.

(Cabungcal, Jerome D., 2016) Stated that “as year level of students in

school becomes higher, their study habits differ from time to time. The kind of

study habits they have shown the differences or improvements in how they

become skilled and earnest about learning new things.”

(Mendezabal, 2013) Opinionated that study habit is the pattern of behavior

adopted by students in the pursuit of their studies that serves as the vehicle of

learning. It is the degree to which the student engages in regular acts of studying
3

that are characterized by appropriate studying routines (e.g. reviews of material,

frequency of studying sessions, etc.) occurring in an environment that is

conducive to studying.

(Rabia, Mahwish, 2017) Opinionated that “Study habit is; buying out a

scheduled and un-interrupted time to apply one`s self to the task of learning. And

without it, one does not grow and becomes self-limiting on life. Study habits tell a

person that how much he will learn and how far he wants to learn. These all

could be decided with the help of one`s study habits, throughout the life.”

(Çakıroğlu, 2014) cited Proctor et al. (2006) study habits includes a variety

of activities: time management, setting appropriate goals, choosing an

appropriate study environment, using appropriate note-taking strategies,

choosing main ideas and organization.

(Khan, 2016) opinioned that study habits are student`s ways of studying

whether systematic, efficient or inefficient , also cited Ayodelle and Adebiyi

(2013) implying that efficient performance while inefficient study habits lends to

academic failure.

Study habits can either be good or bad that both affect the student`s

academic performance. Good study habits occur as a result of practice and

knowing what methods are most effective for you as a student, it also help

students to finish their tasks on time, they can submit their assignments, projects,

and requirements on time, read and prepare very well for tests and exams,

resulting good grades at the end of the term or semester.

4

(Ebele & Olofu, Study Habit and Its Impact on Secondary School Students'

Academic Performance in Biology in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, 2017)

Cited Bolling (2000) asserts that good study habit through planning helps

students prepare for what is ahead, and accomplish their academic goals.

(Ebele & Olofu, Study Habit and Its Impact on Secondary School Students'

Academic Performance in Biology in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, 2017)

Cited Harper and Row (2009), highlight good study habits as thus: studying every

day, creating a quiet place at home or anywhere to study, turning off the phone,

TV and other devices that may disturb you when studying, listening to soft music

or white noise, studying in a way that suits your learning style, taking regular

breaks, studying early (do not wait for last minutes), studying the hardest things

first, spending more time on topics you find difficult and asking for help if one is

struggling with his studies, taking notes as one studies as well as organizing

notes in a notebook or folder.

(Ebele & Olofu, Study Habit and Its Impact on Secondary School Students'

Academic Performance in Biology in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, 2017)

Cited on the other hand, bad study habits according to John (2010) are negative

or non-productive study habits which are undesirable and counter-productive to

students’ academic performance.

Bad study habits are: cramming, studying in a noisy environment, studying

while tired, using gadgets while studying, procrastination, truancy, not taking

notes, selective reading, and studying with distraction.

5

The last two years that will equip learners with skills which will better

prepare students for their future whether it be employment, entrepreneurship,

skills development and higher education covers by Senior High School.

There are four tracks in Senior High School, the Academic track,

Technical-Vocational Livelihood (TVL) track, Sports track and the Arts and

Design (A&D) track. The Academic track consist of four strands, the

Accountancy, Business and Management(ABM) strand, Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand, Humanities and Social

Sciences(HUMSS) strand, and the General Academic strand (GAS). Technical-

Vocational Livelihood (TVL) track consist of four strands, Agri-Fishery Arts

strand, Home Economics strand, Industrial Arts strand, and the Information and

Communications Technology strand. The Sports Track according to

edukasiyon.ph “Aims to give understanding of the basic principles and

techniques in relation to Physical Education and recreation.” For the last track,

the Arts and Design (A&D) track according to edukasiyon.ph “Will prepare you as

you wander around design, performative and creative industry.”

If you could be looking forward to become teacher, lawyer, psychologist,

reporter, or social worker someday, take the HUMSS strand. This strand was

design for those who wonder what is on the other side of the wall.
6

Chapter 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the methods and materials that were used in the

conduct of the present study. It includes the Research Design, Respondents of

the Study and Sampling Scheme, Data Gathering Instrument, Collection of Data,

Statistical Treatment of Data, and Ethical Considerations included in this study.

Research Design

Descriptive research means as a scientific method that includes observing

and describing the behavior of a subject without influencing it any way. Base on

Kakkar (2007). Descriptive research method are used when the researchers

wants to describe specific behavior as it occurs in the environment. This

methodology focuses more on the “what” of the research subject rather than

answering question about “how/when/why”. The characteristics occurred since

the present study was concerned in Study Habits of HUMSS Student of Urdaneta

City National High School, and the researchers will gather data using survey

interview slip, the descriptive method of research is appropriate in the study.

10

Respondents of the Study and Sampling Scheme

The Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences Students of Urdaneta City

National High School served as respondents of the study. They were selected

through random sample, as one of the probability sampling method, where it is

made up of people who are randomly selected HUMSS-11 students in Urdaneta

City National High School at San Vicente West, Urdaneta City.

Thirteen randomly selected respondents were included in this study.

Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences have four sections. These sections

are Socrates, Plato, Confucius, and Lao Tzu. Researchers included 3 students

from HUMSS-Socrates, 3 students from HUMSS-Plato, 3 students from HUMSS-

Confucius, and lastly 4 students from HUMSS-Lao Tzu.

Data Gathering Instrument

In this study, the researchers gathered facts, information and data through

interview slip from the respondents. The interview slip consists of 2 parts. Part 1

consist the time, techniques and situations to determine the problems

encountered by the students. Part 2 consists the attendance, compliance and

grade to determine if there are effects of these academic challenges to the

students.

The interview slip were prepared by the researchers and the guide from

their research adviser.

11

Validation of Data

For the validation of the interview slip, two different professionals and with

experties related to the study validated the interview slip. The validators included

one research teacher and English Teacher as the Critic Reader.

Collection of Data

The researchers conducted an interview in obtaining data to know the

study habits of HUMSS Students to their academic performance.

Before the collection of data, the researchers requested permission from

the research adviser and research professor for the approval in administering the

questionnaire in conducting the study.

Furthermore, the researchers had personally interviewed the respondents.

After which, the data was collected, tabulated, analyzed, and interpreted.

Ethical Consideration

The ethical issue was considered to ensure the safety of the researchers

and the respondents during the process of research. According to Bryman and

Bell (2007) Research participants should participate willingly without force.

Respect for the dignity of research participants should be obtained from the

participants prior to the study. Voluntary participation of the respondents in the

research is important. Moreover, participants have the right to withdraw from the

study at any stage they desire to do so. The protection of the privacy of the

respondents has to be ensured. The use of offensive discriminatory or other

unacceptable language needs to be avoided in the formulation of questionnaire.

12

CHAPTER 3

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the analysis and interpretations on the data in

relation to the problem of the study.

The section set forth the following background of the respondents in terms

of respondent profile: age, gender, and strand.

In our study, there are thirteen respondents who have different study

habits from different section namely, Socrates, Plato, Confucius, and Lao Tzu. All

respondent were interviewed because the researchers rest assured that all

information will be recorded.

Case 1 “Student 1”

Profile

Student 1 is 17 years old, male, and from Socrates. The average time he

spend in studying is 2 hours. He said he found effective for studying is around 2

in the afternoon and 4:30 in the morning because for him it is a quiet time for

studying and mostly this is the time his brain works. The study techniques for him

is by getting keywords on his reviewer and also acronyms so it would be easier

for him to memorize. The situations that affect his study habits are that

sometimes he fell asleep while reviewing so he ends up waking up late, using

Facebook also affects his study habits because he spend more time on it than
13

studying and sometimes he forget to eat breakfast and lunch that causes him to

starve.

is more comfortable studying in their house while lying with paper works beside

her. She said that the study techniques she used is using blue ink when

reviewing her lessons and reviewing her lessons just before they have their

actual examination so the details are still fresh on her mind. The most effective

study technique for her is the second mentioned because she can get good

scores when she do that. She said that using messenger is the situation that

affects her study habit or study habits because it distract her so much that she

can’t focus on her studies.

16

She said that studying at night affects her attendance in a way that she is

avail to go to school early because all is organized the night before and she won’t

think anything in the morning. Though sometimes she get so tired easily because

of the lack of sleep, despite of that she still able to manage to attend her classes

on time. The study habit that affects the way she comply with her requirements is

when she over study because she forget the things that she have to do to comply

in their requirements and there are times that she don’t believe in herself and

push herself to achieve perfection. She said that study habits that help her to

myself motivated, praying first and using the app quizlet are the study techniques

she use because keeping herself motivated she knows her goals and she can
19

find ways to achieve it. The situations that affect her study habits is when

laziness strikes or when she is already tired of studying.

When she’s interested in the subject, she’s motivated to learn and she will

be present all the time surely because she studied it will boost her confidence

level to attend classes. For further learning and understanding. She said that

when she’s motivated and she did well on her studies she can surely comply all
