Out-of-field teaching is teaching within an institution that places a certain instructor in

an academic department that is not aligned with their field of expertise and educational

attainment. With this, instructors without prior knowledge about the subject assigned to them,

gain problems of presenting their knowledge and expertise about the topics within the subject.

That deals an effect towards how the quality of education is projected upon the students. This

is due to the shortage of instructors worldwide that makes each and every individual wonder

the future state of education in general within the Philippines.

Teaching out-of-field has become a challenge to the educational system, because it has

transitioned to be very common, that it got to a certain point where it became unspoken. Out-of-

field teaching is a problem to the instructors because they are being placed in an unknown

environment.

In line with this study, it is connected with the teacher identity theory of Brad Olsen

which is an extension of manners by which the hypothetical view portrayed above meets with

current treatments of instructors, instructing and teacher improvement. Recent educational

research has uncovered that educating isn't simply a subjective or specialized system yet a

complex, individual, social, often tricky, arrangement of inserted procedures and practices that

worry the entire individual.

The following are the statement of the problem, What is the profile of the respondents in

terms of: assigned department and years of work experience in PATTS College of Aeronautics,

What are the perception of the instructors on the standard qualifications in terms of: Mastery of

the subject and, Educational attainment? Is there any significant difference on the perception of

the instructors of PATTS College of Aeronautics on their assigned department with their field
of expertise in terms of mastery, educational attainment when grouped according to their

department and years of work experience, and What are the possible solutions that will pre-empt

the struggles and complications of instructors when allocated to a department far from their field

of expertise

The study made use of the researcher’s survey questionnaire that determined the respondents’

perception regarding the out-of-field teaching in senior high school based on the variable

identified in the study such as instructor’s mastery of the subject matter and educational

attainment. The research was carried out in PATTS College of Aeronautics, Paranaque, and the

demographic of the study was the instructors of PATTS College of Aeronautics, under different

departments. The research design of this study made use of descriptive method with a

quantitative approach. The researchers looked for relevant information that were connected to

the study through the internet and books. The data that was gathered in the study were statistically

treated for proper analysis, frequency count, percentages, and mean scores.

The following are the findings of the study with regards to the statement of the problem,

respectively.

100% or 10 respondents were instructors coming from different departments of PATTS

College of Aeronautics. Schools are practicing out-of-field teaching even though they are not

able to acknowledge it. The teacher’s mental state and financial status hinders their full potential

in teaching. There is no significant difference on the perception of instructors regarding Out-of-

Field Teaching in the senior high school of PATTS College of Aeronautics based on their years

of work experience and based on their department. The teachers should participate in training or

seminars to further enhance their skills in teaching and handling a particular subject matter.
It was concluded that instructors are aware and do agree upon the presence of out of

field teaching within schools even though they don’t fully acknowledge it. It is highly

recommended that instructors should attend trainings or seminars because it would further

enhance the skills of an instructor and their way of handling a subject matter. The school

administration should also implement a set of standards of qualifications when employing

instructors. Notably, there should be magnified consideration between the administration and

instructors when the subject is to be assigned to them, within comprehensive assessments of

the skills that he or she is able to utilize for the job.
