PAPER

Country: Islamic Republic of Pakistan
Agenda: Korean crisis
Committee: United Nations Security Council
Delegate name: Aryaman Tekriwal

“Whenever democracy has fallen into a crisis, the Korean people have sprung up in rage.”
Moon Jae-in said this. The Korean crisis is restricting both North Korea and South Korea to
invest their money more in their basic amenities. The world is very troubled about the
Korean crisis and something has to be done…

In 1950, when North Korean troops went into the South Korean territory and tried to unite
South and North Korea, the Korean crisis started… But, did North Korea went in the South
Korean territory for violence? NO! We went with the principle of- UNITY. But did the South
Koreans let that happen? NO.
After the 1950-1953 Korean war today, issues still exist. Today, North Korea is just doing
these nuclear tests just to be ready for a war and to progress. But some countries take the
facts in a very wrong way.
Talking about the Free Trade Zone-we want it. First of all, a free trade zone is an area within
which goods may be landed, handled, manufactured or reconfigured, and re-exported
without the intervention of the customs authorities. Pakistan benefits a lot through trade
from China and North Korea. But talking from the perspective of a friend of North Korea, I
think that they should trade what they want to. There should be equal opportunities and
say for both- South Korea and North Korea. I think they should have their own space and
privacy. This will also improve the ties of South Korea and North Korea. And then who
knows if this zone becomes one of the main factors for the unification of North Korea and
South Korea?! And talking about a unified news channel-we support this idea too. From the
perspective of a Pakistani I support this idea because we will get to know more about Korea.
But as a delegate of the United Nations I would say that the unification should be limited.
Because all the important and classified information should be kept within the government
of the respective country. But yes, there should be at least one such channel. This can only
happen if both the countries support it. Also, the Korean Central News Agency should take
some responsibility.

Some examples of success (even some advantages) of Free trade zone are as follows-

• The Shannon free zone was an attempt to by the Irish government to help the
Shannon airport adjust to a radical change in aircraft technology that permitted
longer range aircraft to skip a required refuelling stops at Shannon. It was an
attempt by the Irish Government to maintain employment around the airport and
for the airport to continue generating revenue for the Irish economy. It was hugely
successful, and is still in operation today.
• In some free zones such as the United Arab Emirates free zone there a number of
benefits such as-
Tax exemption
100% ownership of business
You can open bank account in your business's name
Reasonable renewal fees
100% import and export tax exemptions
100% repatriation of profits and capital
No personal income tax

Some solutions for the Korean crisis are as follows-

• Empathy. There has to be enough empathy for the countries to unite. Without
empathy, it is impossible to obtain a nuanced understanding of foreign leaders’
perspectives, predict their behaviour, or influence them effectively.

• There has to be enough paperwork to unite these two countries. Because these two
countries are such that they can split up anytime. You have got an example in front
of you-the separation of Korea in World War II.

• The UN has to take these countries under strict surveillance. Especially North Korea
has to be taken under strict surveillance. And the UN has to be very persuasive for
South Korea. For North Korea, as a delegate of the UN I must say, there have to be
some strict sanctions if North Korea breaks some rules, laws or any other regulation.

Only then will the Korean crisis can be controlled and possibly, solved…
We can also just hope for the best and unification of Korea…
