collection canister, and an optional bacterial filter.
Scope of this Product Comparison Plastic tubing connects these components, completing
an open-ended system that continuously draws tissue
This Product Comparison covers line-powered and fluid from the surgical field to the collection can-
surgical aspirators capable of creating a vacuum ister. The gauge allows the user to set a safe limit for
pressure of at least 500 mm Hg. For information
on other types of aspirators, see the Product Com-
parisons titled:

This Product Comparison covers the following
device term and product code as listed in ECRI’s
Universal Medical Device Nomenclature System™
(UMDNS™):
• Aspirators, Surgical [10-217]
Purpose
Most surgical procedures require suctioning to re-
move blood and irrigating fluids that accumulate in the
operative field and obstruct the surgeon’s view. Hospi-
tals generally use a central high-flow-rate vacuum
pump that provides vacuum through pipelines to
standard wall inlets throughout the hospital. How-
ever, portable or mobile vacuum systems can be used
if there is no central vacuum system or if suctioning is
required in areas that do not have vacuum inlets.
Principles of operation
The basic surgical aspirator consists of a line-pow-
ered vacuum pump, a vacuum regulator and gauge, a Mobile surgical aspirator
Vacuum pumps
A single- or double-vacuum pump creates suction
within the system. Double-pump systems operate in
synchrony, with both pumps contributing to the suc-
tioning capacity. The three types of pumps used in
surgical aspirators are rotary vane, diaphragm, and
cylinder piston.
In a rotary-vane pump, a rotor is mounted off-center
in relation to the inside diameter of the pump housing Figure 1. Rotary-vane pump
(see Fig. 1). As the rotor turns, sliding vanes that fit
into notches in the rotor follow the contour of the
housing. Air that is trapped between a set of vanes is
compressed and expelled through the pressure outlet.
As rotation continues, the space between the vanes
expands, and the pressure of the air trapped between
the vanes drops, creating suction. Because of the fric-
tion between the vanes and the chamber wall and the
need to achieve airtight contact, several rotary-vane
models use graphite vanes. Some units require oil for
lubrication and sealing and have reservoirs that need
refilling after a specified number of hours of operation.
Aspirate passes through the tubing and into the Most surgical aspirators have an overflow-protec-
collection canister. The typical collection canister is tion assembly in the cap of the second canister that
plastic with a removable plastic lid that includes a prevents large amounts of fluid from overflowing into
vacuum port with a filter, a patient port to which a the pump and valves. Some units feature a third can-
suction tube is connected, and a shutoff valve to auto- ister to collect overflow. Most surgical aspirators use a
matically close the vacuum port. Manufacturers sup- float mechanism as overflow protection. As aspirate
ply reusable or disposable canisters and plastic bag collects in the second canister, a ball or cork floats to
