RESOURCES: Math Built to the Common Core, Glencoe; Illustrative Math; IXL
CLASS POLICIES:
➢ Throughout the year, an emphasis will be placed on problem solving and incorporating algebraic concepts to
real world situations.
➢ Math homework will be given on a daily basis. We will try to give work time at the end of each class. This gives
us the opportunity to work with students one on one to answer students’ questions before they leave. Their
homework will be graded with a combination of completion and accuracy.
➢ We will be giving quizzes and tests. Students may have the opportunity to retake some assessments, if they
make arrangements with their teacher for additional practice and to schedule the retake.
➢ If a student has questions in math, he/she can schedule a time to meet us before school (8:00–8:15) or after
school to get help, in addition to our class work time. If a student is struggling with work at home, remind him/her
of this option.
➢ When students sign up for high school classes, we will need to sign off on each student’s math placement. We
will recommend a class and give the student reasons for our recommendations.
TOPICS COVERED:
Unit 1 Properties of Real Numbers
Students will:
- work with the properties of real numbers
- define, compare and order all categories of real numbers
- evaluate expressions, and apply the order of operations
- understand the laws of exponents and scientific notation
Unit 2 Solving Linear Equations
Students will:
- use properties of equality to solve one-step, two-step, and multi-step equations in one variable; also use
distributive property and solve equations with variables on both sides
- write and solve ratios and proportions and use a variety of strategies to solve
- work on percent problems and function form
Unit 3 Graphing Linear Equations and Systems of Equations
Students will:
- review and plot ordered pairs on an x-, y- plane to graph linear equations and functions
- create and use tables, x- and y- intercepts, and the slope and y-intercept to graph
- calculate and interpret slope as a rate of change
- use slope to identify and justify parallel and perpendicular lines
- write and graph direct variation (proportional) equations
