1. PROJECT OVERVIEW
PT. Petrokimia gresik make a Sulfur Melter is used to melt solid sulfur to liquid
sulfur. Heating coil is placed on sulfur melter to melt the solid sulfur. The problem is
heating coil pich dimension required too small. So, the coil can’t be fabricated. It can be
solve with increase the pitch dimension but it make coil can’t be installed on site and
coil must be cut. The engineer thing that way will decrease performance of heating coil.
2. DOCUMENT SCOPE
This document covers engineering verification of decrease heating area of
coil on 1003D.
3. DOCUMENT PURPOSE
To inform decrease heating area on heating coil sulfur melter before
fabrication.
4. DESIGN LIMITATION
There are some process data from PT. Petrokimia but not complete and can’t
be use for calculation. So, engineer uses water properties data to make calculation.
That will not change the result besause, variable manipulation is only change pitch
dimension.

5. BASIC BASIC CALCULATION
All of heat transfer equation always use basic heat transfer equation (eq1)
𝑄 = 𝑚. 𝑐. ∆𝑇 (eq1)
Q = Energy (kJ)
𝑄 = 𝑈. 𝐴𝑠 . ∆𝑇𝑙𝑚 (eq5)
𝐴𝑠 = 𝜋𝐷𝐿 (eq6)
D = Diameter (m)

As1 = πDL
As1 = π (0.049)89.016

= 35% desisit of heat transfer
8. CONCLUTION
From calculation above can be conclude that varible 2 with pitch 200 mm
cannot apply for change heating coil on variable 1 with pitch 102 mm. Because, defisit
of heat transfer more than 10 %.
9. SOLUTION
To eleminate defisit of heat transfer. Tubes will be put some fin which dimention
adequate the defisit of heat transfer. Engineer cannot design dimension of fins.
because, engineer don’t have operational site data to design it.
