2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in discussion/ activity?)
i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I am only a little familiar with how
distinct organizations and institutions function and operate with each other. However,
reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that the cognitive
interaction consists of four (4) steps. In the first part which the source organization will
show the other institution fresh data, ideas and alternatives. Second, a member state or
NGO (non-government organization) should play the role of influencing other
institution’s decision. Third, the idea that the target institution relied on should alter
their priority order, as it will help the source institution. Lastly, the impact of the
influencer should have an impact on the negotiation method and outcome of the target
institution. The result of the target institution’s shift of preferences will be felt not only
by those who are in favor of it and the source of institution but also by those employees
who are unwilling to accept it.
ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I am aware that there are two
institutions that can be involved with one another. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that two or more institutions can
be co-evolved. This has been stated in the first article. I thought at the first glance it
meant that without the other institutions involved could not stand alone. But as I read
the article, I realized it meant that institutions that used to be standing alone would co-
evolve with the others. They will create, affect, and influence each other through this.
Overall, I realized that the institution of one has a huge impact on the other institutions
because without the help or influence of the other, they cannot achieve their current
status.
iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I am not really familiar with
institutional interaction mechanisms. However, reading the article/understanding the
lesson, I now think/realize that there are four causal interaction mechanisms. It was
done to analyze and clarify how to transfer causal impact from one institution to
another. I have also learned that, as stated in the reading, interaction between
commitments is based on the power of international standard and norm. Because not
all institutions have the same standards and norms, the country in which they live is a
huge factor in this where they have to negotiate and interact with each other to fulfill
all their desires.
iv. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, my prior understanding of
economic integration is more positive because it is an agreement between distinct areas
where the tariff restrictions are primarily partially or completely abolished. However,
reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that it can also cause
complications between states that are involved in the integration. One instance
described in the reading was the European Union when they experienced a financial
crisis in which it also led their position in world trade to fall. Another example of the
implications of this was when the economic community of ASEAN experiences issues
with discrepancies between the nations concerned. I now realized that it is unavoidable
in an institution that each country will benefit from its inclusion among the countries
involved, but one problem in the integration that I realized when reading the article is
that some cannot reach a greater phase of integration.
3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want more
explanations about?
i. Is it feasible for a source institution without obtaining benefits to affect and
impact a target institution?
ii. How can we test that there is indeed a co-integration existence?
iii. How does the dynamic effects of European economic integration differ from a
custom union in a common market?
