The Virtual Archaeology Review (VAR) is launching a Special

Call for Papers: Virtual Archaeology Review (VAR) Issue on ‘Digital Heritage Knowledge Platforms’ that will be
published in January 2020.
Special Issue: ‘Digital Heritage Knowledge Platforms’ Current cultural heritage research and practice throughout the
world has become more interdisciplinary, international and
digital. A further step in the conservation and dissemination of
intangible and tangible cultural heritage is the development of
digital heritage knowledge platforms. There has been an
emergence of interlinked, interdisciplinary knowledge platforms
which combine heritage information with the potentials of digital
technologies. These platforms should be able to merge heritage
knowledge from various disciplines that deal with conservation; this
knowledge includes built heritage, arts and intangible aspects of
shared heritage. There is great potential for virtual heritage
applications that utilize the interlinking connections of these
platforms, which should allow for heritage to be understood in its
authentic contexts and origins.
The vision of creating a shared heritage network depends on
understanding different approaches and visions of cultures and
heritage. However, there is a gap in literature; there has been no
comparison of new developments within an international
framework while also exploring cultural differences and how
experiences differ geographically. This VAR special issue aims to
bring together views from different parts of the world into a
comparative, analytical platform. In order to assess international
perspectives and the challenges associated with digital heritage
within the framework of cultural geographies, we invite researchers
and experts to contribute articles touching on heritage theory and
practice and with interdisciplinary perspectives under the umbrella
of digital platforms.
