Title: Globalization from Below: The Rise of Transnational Communities
Today we are living in global community with no physical boundaries. People across the
world are connected by the internet, communications, by the comfort of travel, people, money,
information, ideas, and goods are costly moving between countries. This notion causes cultural
and economic changes in the countries involved. As modernization blast up, technological
advancement were made and create further possibilities of international trade and exchange. In
accordance to what I learned in the article is that, the increase of had both created and been
supported by international regulatory group mention in the last article subjected economic
integration, transnational agreements involving free trade agreements. I believe that there is any
single country that is independent. Every country is dependent to some point on the international
trade for their own prosperity and economic building.
Reading the article, made me constantly seeing the Philippines in which I believe it is one
of the country in Asia who strongly opened arms and embraces globalization, thinking that it is
the solution to its many problems. In accordance to what I learned from the article, the concept
of transnationality has a good and bad effect in the economic built of the country. Let’s open our
eyes and look at the reality in which investors who are investing in the country would not invest
if we would not lower the tariff on the product they will manufacture and allocate. But on the
other hand, the only benefit that the country would be getting from these transnational
companies is the work force. In which people who are incapable of acquiring blue collar jobs may
enter in the industrial manufacturing business and still can earn income for a lifetime expense in
which bring good effect in the country itself. Weighing the good and bad effect of this concept, I
may say that the benefit is one sided to the transnational companies in which it is like a manner
of take it or leave it. Moreover, I also found out that there is a regulatory law that controls the
number of transnational communities that which prohibits employers from knowingly hiring,
recruiting, or referring for a fee any alien who is unauthorized to work. The public policy behind
this law reflects the concern that the problem of illegal immigration and employment requires
greater control and stronger enforcement mechanisms by the federal government. As a result of
this law, all employers are required to verify both the identity and employment eligibility of all
regular, temporary employees, temporary agency personnel, and student to be employees hired.
Lastly, I significantly learned that, the things that is done by this transnational companies
including the products their manufacture, the value of the name it carries can greatly affect the
culture and the practice of the citizen in their everyday life.
Given the current state of the Philippines, these transnational companies have overcome
and over used the natural resources of this country. In which it cause destruction of diversity,
beauty and balance of our resources. Like for example, the late issue in which Mrs Gina Lopez
battled for the suspension of mining activity by these transnational mining companies who is
unethically digging for natural resources, leaving the land area unclear, devastated, and most
specially unsafe for the fellow residence to sleep tight at night during rainy weather, thinking that
a big rock might fall on top of their roofs and causing liabilities. Another thing, the newly
renovated Boracay beach in which it is the star attraction of the Philippines was found out that
in the far distance of the main shore of Boracay, there is this main pipe connected to a factory.
This pipe is constantly releasing dark liquid and smells funny. This discovery is giving the business
owners and the people of Boracay islands a constant worry. Because as they said, the closing of
Boracay has greatly affected not just their livelihood but also their life as well. Normally, we
always think that, with more industrial business the brighter the shine of our country would be
come. As I was enlighten by the article, if I were given a chance to impose a regulatory law in the
Philippines, I would basically focus on limiting the factories per region in which it will not cause
big harm in the environment.
We cannot deny in the present situation of the Philippines, we need this transnational
companies, but how could the government of the Philippines atleast regulate the accessibility of
the protected natural resources of the country from over consuming? Second is, in the past
weeks, there is this news report in which it was topic there that, there are companies who get
foreign workers like chines instead of Filipinos. The question is, how will the workers will the
government advertise Filipino workers not just only in the country but the whole world as well?
And lastly, how could we protect our immigrant outside the boundary of the country? Because
as we know Filipinos are scattered all over the globe and I’m curious on how could the
government response to their distress.
